We are considering ocean paradise resort or coral rock hotel in February 2009. Is there good snorkeling from the beach at either of these hotels or suggestions for medium price, half board hotel with snorkelin from hotel beach. We have been to the maldives where you can snorkel from beach, is Zanzibar similar?

Both properties are on the East coast, which is very beautiful, but on so good for swimming in the sea. This area is fairly tidal, and although there is a offshore reef you will have to travel.

Also both properties are rather different in size and style.

Perhaps look at the Matemwe area opposite the Mnemba Atoll. This will provide excellent snorkeling a short boat trip away. Alternitively, Unguja Resort or Fumba Beach Lodge. Fumba is used as the departure point for Safari Blue (an excellent value snorkeling trip) and Unguja is often visited by dolphins.

If budget allows, Chumbe Island or Mnemba Island is the way to go.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Kind regards

we've been to Zanzibar twice on the east coast at Bwejju and Jambian and are heading back in Oct 08 to get married at Coral Rock. Coral Rock is fab, very laid back and quiet if that's what you like you'll love it. There was no snorkelling off the beach from either place as far as I know, I think you have to head out to the reef by boat.

I'm not sure but think you may have to head for one of the other surrounding islands for off the beach snorkelling but dont let that put you off Zanzibar it's a wonderful place with fantastic, friendly people.

Just back from Zanzibar. We moved around quite a bit and snorkelled wherever we could. We snorkelled off the Kendwa beach once we had done a boat trip with the locals and got to know where to go. Stunning snorkeling off the beach of Chumbe. A boat ride off Matemwe took us to the Mnemba reef which was also great. No snorkelling is available off the beach at any of the resorts on the NE coast as far as we could determine.

We just got back having stayed at various places around the island and snorkelled from a few of them. Depends exactly what you want out of the snorkelling. If you want to do it "properly" - vast coral reefs, shoals of fish, etc, then you will likely need to take a boat. We did that twice, once off the tip of Nungwi and once from Prison island combined witha visit there. Both times were amazing. Apart from that though, we did snorkel often off the beach at Flame Tree Cottages - you can walk out at low tide and snorkel in fairly shallow water, but the coral, fish, etc are still amazing - much more so there than off the east coast where you'd have to walk miles.

Hope thats useful.
