Chumbe or Manta Reef on Pemba

We are in the process of finalizing some beach time after gorilla trek and safari. We have quotes for both of these places. We love to snorkel....which would be our better option? Can we independently snorkel at either location or do we need to rely on a boat and driver?

Thanks for any info

At Chumbe you have to rely on the boat and driver to snorkle. Depending on tides they have one or two snorkel trips a day.

I had a fantastic time diving in Mnemba atoll, near Matemwe (after a gorilla safari). People snorkeled there as well but it was a boat trip out to the reef.

We have just returned from Gorilla Trekking /Tanzania Safari /Zanzibar Snorkeling trip and stayed at many unique and charming lodges, but Chumbe Island Eco Lodge was, by far, the highlight accommodation experience of our 19 day trip. It is a 6 star "rustic" experience and my only regret is that we didn't stay at least 3 nights. (I posted a detailed account of our time there on Tripadvisor if you care to check it out. We snorkeled at Matemwe Beach(Mnemba Island) and Chumbe Island and both were excellent. They both require transport by boat and you snorkel with a guide. The boat trip at Chumbe is very short and we literally drifted over an amazingly healthy reef back to our beach. The coral at Chumbe is the best we have ever seen but there seemed to be more fish at Mnemba.
