Money required

I will be going on my honeymoon to Zanzibar early in December and would just like to find out how much money is necessary to take with you in cash? We will be staying in Stone Town for 3 nights which include bed, breakfast and dinner at the hotel, even though we'll only be eating breakfast there and exploring the whole day and night. What do meals cost on average, we want to eat all the local dishes and experience the culture as much as possible.

The rest of the time we will be staying at a resort on the North East of the Islands which will be full board. So there we can pay for snorkel excursions using credit cards and will only be tipping where necessary.

Hi there,

Just a quick question why have you booked Half Board in Stone Town if the likelihood of you eating your dinner there is not very high? Just a questions - all hotels have the option of BB.

Local food does not cost that much, $10 per person will get you a whole selection of food at Forodhani gardens which is the local night market.

If you want to try some of the restaurants that are more 'local orientated' it is not that expensive.

Where are you staying in the North East of the island. It will help to give you the best advice on how much things cost in that area. Most trips and excursions can be put on your bill but be aware that just about every hotel on the island has got about 5/6% service charge. Do Not bring travellers Cheques they are no longer accepted in Zanzibar and if you do find somewhere that will take them they have extremely high service charge (Zanzibar airport used to charge 25% a few years ago).

There are only ATMs in Stone Town and they will give you Tanzanian Shillings, be sure to change back to Dollars or Rands or a major currency before you leave the country.

As above reply, no reason for Half-board (B&D) in Stone Town. Go B&B only and then you can enjoy dinner with many choices elsewhere. Also as most tours depart out of ST, best to book any of these during your 3/day stay rather than when at the beach where you'll be charged extra.

On the beach as all meals included, just be sure when ordering beverages especially bottles of wine you know price ahead of time (can be costly) rather than be surprised... always ask. Hotels here will take credit cards, but do inquire whether they assess a surcharge for use of plastic... again you don't want surprises.

Prices at hotels (Stone Town or out at the beach) are shown in USD or Euro; small local eateries are usually in Shillings, so obtain from ATM while in ST and reconvert any remaining before departing island or use as tips at hotels/resorts.
