Zanzibar for single girls

Myself and two friends are planning to head to Zanzibar this December - we've left it a bit late and are on a bit of a budget, but may have found reasonable accommodation at Kwenda Amaan Bungalows. I am just a bit concerned, with three single girls we may get bored and feel a bit isolated.... Does anyone know how easy is it to move around to other venues with bars, and restaurants etc?

Hi

Not a problem, even all the way to the Stone Town is only about $40-$50 if you bargain hard.

Be esp carefull at night and on the beach, there have been a few attempted rapes, so better the expense of a taxi.

I love Kendwa and go there quite a lot, since I live in Dar. The entertainment there is variable. It is quite small and there are only really two bars. Sometimes there are huge parties that go on all night, other nights it is very quiet. Kind of depends on whether the overland trucks come in or not. I've usually had a blast there. It is easy to get a taxi to Nungwi where there are more bars and restaurants. During the day it's a fairly easy walk down the beach (as long as it's low tide) I would not recommend going to stonetown for a night out, as it is quite far and the night life there is also hit and miss. If you go to Kendwa during a full moon there will be a really good full moon party to which people from all over Zanzibar come. Kendwa Amaan Bungalows is very nice, but probably more expensive than some of the other places you can try -Sunset Bungalows (best bar and parties as far as I'm concerned) and Kendwa Rocks (also has a nice bar). They're all just a short stroll down the beach from each other though.

Enjoy.

Was just in Zanzibar two weeks ago and I stayed at the Amaan Bungalows. Nice clean place and I had no problems at all. Only thing I didn't like is that the beach pretty much disappears at high tide. I was only there for a couple of days though, and I think I would have been pretty bored if I stayed there longer. I am not much of a one for just laying on the beach day in day out. The jellyfish were pretty bad so I wasn't tempted to swim, and the people who went snorkelling and scuba diving complained about the jellyfish as well. The restaurants are pretty much all the same (I wasn't crazy about the seafood) and there wasn't much entertainment in the evenings. I DID go to one bar just outside the gates of the Amaan Bungalows...alot of people there, and music, but not really too exciting. Pretty well everyone lying around either drunk or stoned. Stone Town was interesting and I went out in the evenings, but could not find a full moon party. I was with a small group of women and I felt pretty safe although as it was Ramadan, we were warned not to be out on the streets between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m.
