Mykonos or Paros in middle to late May, 2009?

We are trying to decide between Mykonos or Paros for late May, 2009 and will be staying at one or the other for 3-4 days. Our interests are good food, beaches, happy hours, quiet time in the sun, archaelogical sites and walking around the general area where we would be staying. Any thoughts?

Welcome Jkh:-) FYI, you posted in 'Oia' forum which is in Santorini! Nonetheless, for a late May adventure, both isles would actually work..Paros has wonderful beaches and chances are it will definetely be much more quiet than popular Mykonos..from where you'll be able to visit the archaeological isle of Delos:-) Mykonos is an extremely popular isle and pricier as well! Think you'll have a more 'real' isle life experience in Paros (if that's what you're looking for) otherwise, both fit into your criterea! Let's see what others think here....Enjoy!

Assuming you're still planning on staying on Santorini, I would recommend Paros as your second island. Both Mykonos and Santorini will be in "Cruise Ship Mode" by late May, meaning there will be lots of tourists crawling over the island's main attractions then which you won't be able to avoid. Paros, on the other hand, will provide you with a more authentic island 'feel'. The harbor is not deep enough for the cruise ships so that annoyance will be avoided. There are some interesting sites to visit, the beaches are calm and uncrowded, the main village of Parikia has many bars, restaurants and shopping opportunities but still retains the small-village atmosphere. You can also visit Delos as a daytrip excursion from the village of Naoussa, and there's a local shuttle ferry across to Antiparos as well. It takes 3 hours by daily regular car ferry and 1.5 hours by FlyingCat. Hotel prices are lower on Paros than on Mykonos.

Forgot to mention that the Delos daytrip from Paros also includes a short stop on Mykonos for a quick look around Mykonos Town.

Thank you for the information. Paros it is!! Now I have to find a place to stay in Paros. Any ideas? We like to walk from where we are staying to restaurants, beach, etc. However, would it be a good idea to rent a car? We like small hotels, B & B's and all with decent locations to the good life!

You don't mention your daily room budget, so I don't know what to recommend. I have stayed at Alexandra's Rooms in Parikia, a very nice basic domatia right along the waterfront, just a short walk, about 1/4 mile, to the left from the ferry port. It's next to the Hotel Paros which seems like another good possibility. I believe they're owned by the same people, who also operate the "Colors" shop next door.

There are buses on the island, but renting a car or motor scooter will give you the best way to see the whole island, and you can take it with you across to Antiparos on the small local car shuttle that leaves the little port of Pounta on Paros several times each day.

If you do think you might rent a car in Greece be sure to first go to your local AAA office to get an International Driving Permit, no test required. If you get in an accident and don't have one your insurance will be invalidated, you'll be required to pay cash for repairs to both cars and you'll be in trouble with the local police.

Hi Jhk,

Parikia, being the main town on the island, has the most to see, and probably the best selection of restaurants and clubs. It also has the best bus connections to all other parts of the island and Antiparos. The best beaches, though, are near Naoussa and along the east side of the island, e.g. Piso Livadi and Chrissi Akti.

You might consider staying in Naoussa, where you can take taxi boats to several excellent beaches in Naoussa Bay. It's also where the excursion boats to Mykonos/Delos depart.
