Hotel recommendations please

Have just booked flights to Santorini on the 6th May 2010, returning from Crete on the 16th May, can anyone recommend hotel with excellent views for around 80 euros a night, or will we have to pay more? we would like access to a pool as well if possible, have had a look on the internet and hotels do seem quite expensive, and there is so many to choose from...we like the look of Oia, would you recommend this area? We will be taking the ferry or fast ferry back to Crete but dont have a definate date for this return as yet, will we need to book our ferry to Crete in advance?, and what is the must see places in Santorini, would it be better to hire a car while in Santorini, or is it better to take taxi or public transport? I have also read that Oia is very expensive, and that the tavernas and shops are over priced is that correct? any advice would be greatfully received - thanks in advance.

The top floor room at Aspa Villas has an excellent view for €85: http://www.aspavillas.com/index.html

Delfini Hotel is another possibility: http://www.delfini.gr/index.htm

Here are two without a pool but you can use the Lioyerma Cafe/Pool on the sunset end of the village if you want to swim. Keep in mind that the pools aren't heated and will be very chilly in early May.

Advance booking won't be necessary in May, the ferries won't be full then. Just wait until you're on Santorini to book. The schedule for next May won't be out until the end of March. http://www.ferries.gr/hfd Take note of the no-sail dates.

A rental car is always the best way to get around. That way you can come and go at your own pace. The island has an excellent bus system and many taxis but one round trip from Oia to the beach by taxi will cost you the same as a per-day rental car charge.

Some restaurants and shops are expensive, yes, but there are also many that are not. Menus with pricing are posted outside so you can look before choosing. Keep in mind that grilled meats and fish are sold by weight if not priced on the menu, so be sure to ask for the price per portion before ordering.

Thank you so much for your informative post, I have looked at the recommendations for hotels and they all look good, just trying to make a decision now , just once last question - I hope - is there any car hire companies that you would recommend, we would like to pick up the car from the airport, and return to the port. Thank you once again.

If you book with Spiridakos Rent-A-Car they have an office at the ferry port and will arrange for a pick-up at the Airport.

I went to Santorini for the 1st time a couple of weeks ago, on the way back from our place near Ag Nik as we had a cheap easyJet flight out of Santorini in a reverse of yours, stayed in Oia for a couple of nights & loved it.

Having spent several evenings trawling through the posts on here I finally chose the Lauda Apartments which were €100 when we went but do have a pool, albeit small, & were absolutely great. I found your comments most useful BLL, thanks very much. The places BLL has recommended were just down the main marble path from Lauda & both looked nice, but I doubt if anywhere in Oia overlooking the Caldera has a big pool as it'd be a engineering mission too far.

As for ferries to Crete, they often don't open the bookings until a couple of weeks before but as mentioned it won't be busy. Taxis were €25 ferry port to Oia & Oia to airport & again I'd agree that if you want to travel around a small car would be a good idea. The buses all seemed jammed full & you can't go from the airport to Oia directly.

Eating & shopping. To be honest it's like most places in Crete, some are pricey, others more reasonable. Greece after the Euro simply isn't as cheap. We ate at a few places but estiatorio Petros, again on the marble path, was by far the best & the stuffed squid was to die for. Being simplistic I looked for places who did carafes of local wine, rather than bottles, and they were generally cheaper. We paid about €40ish for 2 of us, more than enough food, 3 half litres of wine & a couple of free karafakia Raki. Some of the jewellery & nik naks are expensive but the craft type gear we found was decently priced & pleasingly different.

I'll definitely be going back!

Hi there Hooly, thank you so much for the information, am still looking on the internet to find a hotel that we like and BLL suggestions seem to be the best so far - but will check out your recommendations - snap!! we also have a property in Agios and got a really good deal with easyjet for next May... will print out your taverna recommendations - having flown over santorini so many times its going to be great to actually spend sometime there, I am really looking forward to it, my only reservation is the fast ferry (or whatever its called) as I get very sea sick, and in May we may experience some rough seas....
