speciality lodging vs. hotels? Sunset view vs. volcano view

speciality lodging vs. hotels? Sunset view vs. volcano view?

Can someone explain what is meant by "speciality lodging"? (as there is an entirely different section on tripadvisor for this type of lodging vs. hotels)

Also, can you not see the sunset if you have a room with the "volcano" view?

Thanks

Specialty lodging covers the smaller, boutique-style accomodations that don't necessarily offer full hotel services. There may be self-catering rooms offered or rooms with just a fridge, TV and coffee maker, or more luxury-style rooms, apartments and suites that are either self-catering or not. Breakfast may or may not be offered. B&Bs fall into this category, as do lots of small properties with just a few rooms.

It is my understanding that for a property to be listed as a hotel there must be a concierge on duty as well as 24-hour reception service. Then you get into the separation of hotels by star rating, which is fairly nebulous on the islands, moreso than in Athens where these ratings are regulated more strictly.

Most hotels face south into the caldera, not west towards the sunset. Hotels in Imerovigli have the best views in both directions because of the high elevation there. Some hotels in Oia have a sunset view because of their location in the village, but only a few of them offer this. It's all about the location and the convolutions of the cliff face either blocking the view west or not. Your ability to have an unobstructed view of the sun actually setting on the horizon is also determined by the time of year you go to Santorini. Sometimes that specific view is blocked because the sun is in the southwestern sky and the small island of Thirassia is in the way.

Wow nice response!!

So when a hotel offers "caldera sunset view" what does that mean? Is that not a true view of the entire sunset? (IE art maisons)

Thanks

caldera- is the cliff from akrotiri lighthouse to oia and the thirassia cliff

volcano- is the ''neakameni'' island

caldera view isnot the same with volcano view.

sunset view has many points in island from pyrgos village -akrotiri-megaloxori and about all island.

caldera view isnot the same '' on caldera'' , example from pyrgos village of the midle of island has caldera and sea view BUT is very far from caldera and the sea.

the pictures of santorini island- white houses, blue dorm churches, IS FROM

the traditional villages on caldera, that villages is only fira-firostefani-imerovigli -oia.

the best position? one londge-hotel ON caldera , inside of this villages. and if has and sunset view ! is most ideal.

for special londge. like BLL post, and

oia for example is the first one in greece to be listed as an architectural monument in 1976 from hellenic tourism organisation.

for this reasom oia has special rules for the hotels, has only smaull special londge with 1-or more tradittional houses.

architecture santorinian cavehouses is really unique.

The interpretation of "sunset view" is sometimes very loose, implying a hotel might have a view that they really can't provide. Of course you can still see the colors change in the clouds and on the buildings everywhere, but only a few hotels actually have an unobstructed view of the sun "setting" beyond the horizon. The hotel's photo gallery usually tells the tale, although even there sometimes you'll find sunset photos taken from elsewhere.
