Poughkeepsie to jfk

Hi, i need your advices urgently!

My son will travel from Poughkeepsie to JFK alone and this will be his first time in NY. Please advice which train he should take to NY and which station? And which way from NY to JFK he needs to take?

He has two options.

1) Take a MetroNorth train to Grand Central from Poughkeepsie. Get the 6 train uptown from Grand Central to Lexington Ave/53rd street Station. Transfer there for a Jamaica-bound E train. Get off at Sutphin Blvd/Archer Ave, and transfer to the AirTrain to his terminal.

2) Take an Amtrak train from Poughkeepsie to Penn Station. Get the LIRR from Penn Station to Jamaica. Transfer to the AirTrain to his terminal.

The first route is less expensive, but longer and with more transfers. The second route is more expensive, but with fewer transfers.

BB has laid out the alternatives. Be aware that there are fewer Amtrak trains. They're also more subject to delay since they originate further away. Metro North trains will begin in Poughkeepsie so have a much better chance of leaving on time.

Neither trip will be short. It's about three hours on the cheap train, the faster option only saves about half an hour. And yes, he needs to leave time for delays.

Amtrak tickets need to be bought in advance and are for specific trains. This can be done online. Metro North service is an unreserved commuter service so you just show up and buy your ticket before getting on the train.

Amtrak tickets are significantly cheaper if bought well in advance. Metro North fares won't differ by how far in advance you buy the tickets.

Looking at Amtrak fares for one month from now, the lowest fare is $25.00. The trip from Poughkeepsie to Penn Station is just over an hour and a half.

Metro North fares will be $17.00 in "off peak" periods, and $22.75 during the morning rush hour. The most common trip duration from Poughkeepsie to Grand Central is about one hour 50 minutes.
