romantic and inexpensive weekend get away?

Hi all,

1 year anniversary coming up in Sept, I wanted to go to some place that is about less than 4 hours drive. It can be in Canada too.

Something quiet and romantic. Maybe go hiking and somewhere with water would be nice. Had originally thought of going to Niagara falls but it's too touristy for this occasion. Any ideas of area and hotel would be great!

I was thinking of some nice cabin, with hot tub and big bed

My boyfriend's coworker recommend to us this place in Canandaigua if we ever wanted to do a "staycation." http://www.morgansamuelsinn.com/home1.html

Here's a site that has a bunch of Bed & Breakfasts in the Finger Lakes: http://www.stayfingerlakes.com/

I've yet to do any kind of multi-day trip in this region, but I know I'd love to do a Bed & Breakfast sometime. Skaneateles over closer to Syracuse is an absolutely beautiful town.

Edit: Oh, and congrats on 1 year :)

So I started looking at some of the places and found this one: http://www.thepearlofsenecalake.com/index.htm It's the Pearl of Seneca Lake in Dundee, NY. I kind of fell in love. Then came back here to look at reviews. It's #1 of 9 in that area! Check out reviews here: tripadvisor.com/…CHECK_RATES_CONT

I highly recommend the Quiet Place - http://www.thequietplace.com/ . They have a number of cabins in the Finger Lakes, very nicely appointed, most with hot tubs, with an isolated woodsy feel, great for getting away from it all. My wife and I stayed at the Naples Chalet recently and loved it - a view of Canandaigua Lake from the deck, and a few minutes drive to Naples. There's also good hiking in the area. I'm not sure I'd consider it inexpensive but if it's in your price range it's well worth it.

thanks all!

So i brought up the idea of a B&B and she said she likes something more along the lines of Victoria or really old like Middle Ages (castle) type of place. She hates the country type of B&B, you know where they have flower wall paper and such.

It's not a B&B, but how about Belhurst Castle on Seneca Lake? Some years ago I stayed in the Turret Room (I think that's what it was called) - pretty cool space.

Like Yankee Dave, my wife and I have stayed at The Quiet Place. (Naples, Bloomfield, Honeoye & Candlewood) All were quiet, clean, well furnished and very romantic. We're looking forward to our stay at their new addition, South Hill Lodge this Winter. While staying at one of TQP's we found Grimes Glen: http://www.nyfalls.com/grimesglen.html BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS in Naples!

We love both the Finger Lakes Region in NY and the Niagara Region in Canada, and are well travelled in both areas. Niagara Falls is, as you say, awfully touristy, but just a 20 minute drive from the Falls is Niagara-on-the-Lake (a beautiful, historic town), and the Southern Ontario Wine Region.

So, with that in mind, here are our "romantic budget picks" for both areas.

Finger Lakes: Stay at Seneca Lakeside B&B on the east side of Seneca Lake (breakfast included). Splurge for one special dinner at Suzanne, a 5 minute drive up the road. By day, visit vineyards and hike the gorge in Watkins Glen State Park (take a picnic). For less expensive dinners go into Watkins Glen to the Roosterfish Pub or House of Hong (great Chinese food), or to Geneva for a range of inexpensive restaurants.

Niagara Region: Stay at the Duncan Quinn House B&B (breakfast included). Splurge for a special dinner at one of the wineries (Hillebrand, Peller, Strewn), or at Queenston Heights, which is at the Brock Monument on the bluff overlooking the Niagara River, and has breathtaking views all the way to Toronto (on a clear night). By day tour wineries (sound familiar?) browse the quaint shops and boutiques in Niagara-on-the-Lake, picnic beside the river, and go for an inexpensive dinner at The Keg Steakhouse (by the Welland Canal locks), or at one of the less expensive restaurants off the main drag in NOTL.

HI all!! Thank you so much for all the ideas!

So I finally decided to splurge on the hotel and will be staying at the Hilton in a king bed suite with fireplace and jacuzzi! my pockets hurting but how many 1 year anniversaries do you get right? :)

Now, I will be looking for a nice restaurant. I have researched some and found out the restaurants in Niagara falls, ON is very touristy and charge a lot for bad food. I don't care about the price that much, but I want good food for it. I will check out all the advises so far but keep them coming about what is a good romantic and offbeat restaurant! Oh and I am willing to drive to it so it doesn't need to be really close to Niagara Falls Thanks!

I haven't been out that way in a while but I'm thinking the Niagara on the Lake area will have some good choices. But I also think you'll get more benefit from posting this in the Niagara Falls or NOTL forums if you haven't already done so.
