I don't know to much about Syracuse and I'm sure other people on this website can help you with that. Within an hour or so, there are nice trips to the Verona, NY casino, Chittenango Falls State Park, and Ithaca, NY which you may enjoy.

Have a nice trip.

Syracuse itself is not usually considered a vacation destination but the area around it certainly is. There are some things in Syracuse that you could do: visit the Erie Canal Museums for some local history, visit Gifford (Burnet Park) Zoo, eat at the Dinosaur (a popular barbeque joint) or walk around Armory Square, which has a fun Musuem of Science and Technology and decent restaurants. There is a decent weekend farmers market as well.

There are some good state parks nearby; I like Green Lakes and Chittenango Falls in particular.

Syracuse is located on the edge of the Finger Lakes region and the wine country. The Finger Lakes are a beautiful chain of eleven lakes among postoral, rolling hills. Towns to consider visiting are Skaneateles, Ithaca, Watkins Glen, Hammondsport and Canandaigua. There are spectacular state parks near Ithaca and one in Watkins Glen. The wine country is centered on Cayuga, Seneca and Keuka Lakes.

From Syracuse, it is about an hour drive to the easternmost section of the wine country; Skaneatles, however, is only about a half hour drive.

Syracuse is also about an hour from Lake Ontario and an hour and a half from the southern section of the Adirondacks moutains, a beautiful, relatively unspoiled swath of NYS full of recreational opprotunities that is definitely worth making time for. In addition to the chain of mountains, this region is full of wilderness, lakes, ponds and open space.

Hope this halps!

Ir really depands on what you want to do, where you want to go and where you want to base yourself. If you are to base yourself in a few places, you could easily spend a couple of weeks. If you use Syracuse exclusively as a base, you would have to do a lot of driving to go to the wine country and/or the Adirondacks. Tou can see the highlights of Syracuse proper in a day or two, You could day trip to Green Lakes/Chittenango State Park/Cazenovia/Skaneateles. To access the wine country, I'd suggest a different base such as Ithaca or Canandaigua. You could easily spend 3-4 days checking out the Finger Lakes in this area and the wine country. To access the Adirondacks from Syracuse, I'd recommend Old Forge or Blue Mountain Lake. You could easily spend several days here if you are interested in canoeing/kayaking/ hiking. If you are not into the recreational activities mentioned, you could spend a day checking out the area mentioned (there is a good muaeum in Blue Mtn Lake and the Sagamore Great Camp is worth checking out).

When are you going? The State Fair is a lot of fun, and it's just outside of Syracuse, running in late August into early September. If you're going earlier, I believe there's a Harborfest going on in/near Oswego and Fulton (just a little ways away) in mid-to-late July.
