Where are you coming from? The time to leave depends on your starting location.

Leaving from Syracuse, NY...takes us about 7.5 hrs to get to Delaware, but we ALWAYS hit aweful traffic ( beach traffic?) bumper to bumper...we'd like to get'in' sooner , rather than sit in traffic. any suggestions what time we should hit that busy route and avoid in PA ?

Have you considered leaving around midnight and traveling through the night? Mostly just trucks on the highways at that time. If you have kids in tow they usually just sleep through the trip (an added bonus!).

I would try to get there by 9-10am, but the earlier, the better.

My recomendation would be to leave home in early evening . If you are checking into a rental make a reservation at an area hotel for late arrival. Not many of them in Fenwick but North O.C. should not be a problem. Summer weekends DO have a reservation.

This year, we left Gettysburg at 4 am and arrived in Bethany by 8. We love the early morning for driving.

Are you hitting the traffic on Rt 1 around Rehoboth? If so, my suggestion might be to try staying on 113 after Rt 1 splits off in Milford, and then take 26 or 54 to get out to the coast. Other posters, does this sound workable? Or will it cause more problems than it solves?

I would recommend staying on rt 113 and then east on rt 26 or rt 54, depending on where your destination is. Rt 26 will bring you out at Bethany Beach and rt 54 will bring you out at Fenwick Island. Either one is better than coming down Rt. 1 as far as traffic is concerned.

Definately 113 to 26 . The Rt1 corridor from 5 Points (Lewes) through Dewey can be a parking lot.
