Trip to North Pantanal during the 2016 Olympics?

This seems like a bit premature, but for our 10th Anniversary in August 2016 we'd like to take a river safari in the north Pantanal. But, with the Olympics going on in Rio, would that be more trouble than it's worth? I know people are having trouble finding places in Cuiaba during the World Cup, but Cuiaba is hosting WC games so maybe that's different.

Many thanks.

The Olympics are a far way off, but you can be sure 2016 will be a banner year for tourism in Brazil.

I suspect that hotels in the tourist hotspots like Cuiaba will fill up quickly and will probably be charging a premium.

i would be more worried about airfare prices to Brazil during Olympics than finding accomodation in Cuiaba at that time.

Cuiaba and the Pantanal hardly qualify as top spots for foreign tourists in Brazil in terms of volume, although one may assume that increased exposure from WC may change that a bit.

the #1 foreign tourist group in Brazil is Argentines and their main focus are beaches up and down the coast, nowhere near Cuiaba.

this lack of massive tourist presence in Cuiaba is one the reasons for the room shortage during WC, as it does not make sense to build new hotels based only on accomodating people for a total of 4 matches.

If you book in advance, my gut feeling is that you will find enough choices for lodging there.

and you can also try to bypass Rio completely. for example, there are flights from the USA to Brasília, where you can catch a flight to Cuiabá. that will save you time too (unless the connection time turns out to be awful)

but it is way too early for all of that... you will not be able to do much in terms of booking until 2015.

btw, the tourism authority just released a 1-minute video showing Cuiaba and region. besides Pantanal, the cliffs and waterfall you see in video are in the Chapada dos Guimarães park, right next to the city...

it has subtitles in Spanish, as it is geared to the Chilean market (Chile will play there in WC):

Thank you very much. We will probably book very far ahead and use airline miles for our flight if possbile since tickets will be so expensive (river safaris in the Pantanal are already pretty expensive!) .

River safari is expensive, but its unique even priceless to be in a natural zoo seeing Jaguars, plenty of small birds, Capivaras, caimans, Jabirus, piranha, hawks even buffalo.
