Cape Range NP - 2WD or 4WD

Can anyone tell me if Cape Range National park can be explored using a normal 2WD (hire) car or is a 4WD advisable in the month of January?

Thanks in advance,

Two wheel drive is fine. The road is paved as far as Yardie Creek, where it ends. There's a serious 4x4 route that leads across Yardie Creek when it's low, but you certainly don't need a 4x4 to get to Yardie Creek or to see the main sights along the way.

Having said that, we had difficulty accessing Mandu Mandu Gorge (accessible via the Yardie Creek side of the cape) in our Toyota Corolla as the road was godawful rough, but we made it. We bailed on Shothole Canyon (accessible via the Exmouth side of the cape) for the same reason, the road was just too much for our little car. The condition of the unsealed roads varies with the amount of rain, etc.

Don't miss Milyering Visitor's Center in Cape Range - fabulous.

January is cyclone season - it'll be seriously hot and humid and there's always the chance of cyclones and flooding.

Personally, I'd not head north that time of year.

Agree with Mel that 2WD drive is okay to use as far as Yardie Creek. Don't go down any sandy tracks with a 2WD as its very easy to get bogged as some of the roads are deceiving within this region.

Carry heaps of water with you too as its extremely hot in Jan & the distances between A - B are long. I also agree Jan is the worst month for traveling to this area.
