We will be having a family reunion in late Sept. in the Blowing Rock/Boone area. Are there any u-pick apple orchards in the area?

I don't know about the Boone area but if you travel up I-26 on your way to Boone then it will lead you to Henderson County which is the top apple grower in the state, growing nearly 70% off all apples in NC. If you travel to Boone like I do (I-26 to HWY 19 in Madison County) then you'll pass right by Hendersonville.

The Orchard at Altapass is a fun place right on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is also a non-profit. They have live music and other programs. Check out their calendar.

Here's a good resource for finding local produce, including apples and much more:

As mentioned above, Altapass is probably your best bet in the Boone area. There really aren't a whole lot of commercial orchards in the northern NC mountains. Most of them are farther south, around Hendersonville.

We really enjoyed apple picking at the Orchard at Altapass that Ways2go linked to. It's very historic. Take the hayride and hear all about the revolutionary war in the area. The website lists the variety of apples that will be in season in any month. September is a great month. They usually have music there on the weekends, too.

Just an FYI, we were just at the Orchard at Altapass late August 2012 and the guy (owner/manager??) told us they were not really looking to have people pick apples this year. There are some apples on the trees but they have been hit really hard by the weather this year. He said all the orchards around there were like that. The trees did look pretty sad. So it's a cute place to go if in the area, but if you are looking to pick apples there, I would definitely call before you go. We did buy a hot apple pie there and went and ate it up on the parkway with our whole family.

We have been a few times to the Orchard at Altapass. It's in Spruce Pine but not a far drive from Boone/Blowing Rock area. Kids love it, U pick it orchard, usually a band playing and some trails to walk . It's a good day for running the kids around to get them tired and get some really yummy apples.
