Blowing Rock North Carolina with family

My wife and I and four kids (ages 19,17,15 and 11) will be coming through North Carolina on our way to the Outer Banks and have picked Blowing Rock for a 3 day stopover. We plan on staying at the Chetola Resort. Was looking for suggestions on things to do in the area for our family. Also, any specific hikes would be great. We love food so any good restaurants also. Thanks. Bill.

Listed below are several outdoor activities that may help you.

Chetola is a terrific place to stay and an easy walk into Blowing Rock. Storie Street Grill and Bistro Roca are good choices for family dining in town. There is also Mellow Mushroom Pizza. Chetola has a restaurant, but have not tried it yet since it reopened. Woodlands Bar B Que.

I recommend reservations, where they are possible.

In Boone, a very casual choice is Hob Nob Cafe. Usually busy, but offers eclectic choices of delicious food. Vidalia would be another good choice.

You might like to check out Linville Falls, Moses Cone Manor and grounds off the parkway (we like the hike to the firetower), Beacon Heights off the parkway near Grandfather, Rough Ridge near Grandfather, any of the hikes on Grandfather, you can go up the Profile Trail to the top (strenuous) or pay the entry fee and cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge and take a strenuous hike across the peaks from there. There's also an interesting hike right in Blowing Rock (behind the park) to Glen Burnie Falls. It's fairly rough and stony, but not that hard. Do be careful near waterfalls, especially near the tops of falls as people are injured (sometimes killed) falling down them every year.

www.romanticasheville.com has some good tips on hiking in the Blowing Rock/Boone area as well as Asheville with lots of pictures.

We don't end up eating in Blowing Rock as much because our place is in Boone. We go a lot of family friendly places, rather than upscale. I like the Black Cat Burrito in Boone and the Mellow Mushroom there (recently remodeled and nicer than the Blowing Rock one IMO), as well as Coyote Kitchen and Hob Knob and Our Daily Bread. In Blowing Rock you might check out the Six Pence Pub.

Great suggestions above. I would also add Linville Caverns to the list--well worth the short drive (less than an hour) to get there. In fact you could couple it with a trip to Grandfather Mountain as it's in the same direction from Blowing Rock.

Panchopup

FYI. Blowing Rock Mellow Mushroom has purchased the Bob Timberlake property on 221 & Main for a new location. Have not started renovation yet.

Good to know Queeni. The current Mellow Mushroom in Blowing Rock is okay, but the new one in Boone is just really nice. The old one in Boone was always dark and smoky, but did have that nice deck.
