Rt. 321 mountain conditions

How well is Rt.321 maintained during the winter months? Coming up from Florida for Thanksgiving. I was told there was quite a bit of snow in Blowing Rock last year during this time. Just want to be prepared driving up 321 if Blowing Rock experiences another snowy Thanksgiving.

Thanks all.

The 6-7 inches of snow the area saw last Thanksgiving was a rarity, there are often dustings of snow that time of year, but true snow storms are rare that early in the season. Could happen again this year, but it's not the norm. They are equipped for major winter weather in the Northern NC mountains, and hwy#321 being one of the major roads up to the Northern NC mountains is always top priority. I drive it often during Winter months, it's always well treated and maintained during snow and ice conditions. An unusual and extreme winter weather event could cause a (very) temporary closure, but I can't imagine you would run into weather in November that would close that highway.

UNCMickey is right on it. 321 should be fine unless you find yourself right in the middle of an unlikely snowstorm. In that case it would be prudent to let it stop before venturing up the mountain. The Blue Ridge Parkway is typically closed in the winter for bad weather, but the main highways like 221, 321, 421, 105 are all open for business.
