What to do in Boone when it rains?

Question for all you wise travellers and locals... we travelled 400 miles to enjoy the scenic beauty of the blue ridge mts. and of course it is calling for thunderstorms during the days in which we are staying here... beside the biltmore in asheville... what else would you suggest for more indoor related activities to salvage a rainy trip? thanks.

YOu know, there's not much indoor stuff to do in the Boone area....in the evening you could go to the Blowing Rock Stage Company and see a play. There are some theaters. You could just carry an umbrella and dart in and out of the funky stores on Main St.

If it's just thunderstorms, they will hit and pass and probably your whole day won't be lost. Do you have a proch or balcony on your accommodations? Watch the rain, take a nap, read a book, ...don't let the rain stop you. It won;t last forever.

LOL, the weather in Boone can be so unpredictable. You can explore King Street in Boone and stay relatively dry. Get a bite to eat at Macados. That will take up an hour or so. Don't forget dessert - try the hot fudge brownie sundae.

I'm trying to think of what we did when it rained. I guess it's different being a local when it rains, because you don't mind staying indoors for a few hours.

Go to the parkway and get wet. Take a hike and some shoes you don't mind getting muddy. I have been on many hikes when it's raining. It's actually very relaxing. You can stay relatively dry if you hike the loop around Price Lake while it's raining, because you are always under trees.

Go to a movie. Go to Woodland's in Blowing Rock, and have a beer with the locals. It won't rain all day. Just make the most of it. Good luck!

If you like Southern Gospel Music, there is a great event happening at the Boone Fairgrounds. It's one of the biggest events in all of Southern Gospel Music. The music attracts thousands of fans. The Greenes' annual Gospel Singing Jubilee- now called the Everette Greene Memorial Gospel Singing Jubilee - is a must attend for the serious gospel music enthusiast. Bring your lawn chair and get ready to hear the Triumphand Quartet, Michael Combs, the Perrys, Greater Vision, Jeff & Sheri Easter, The Mark Trammell Trio, the Down East Boys, Ivan Parker, the Chuck Wagon Gang, The Primitive Quartet, the McKameys, Gold City, the Freemans, Paid in Full, Big Mo, Mark Bishop, the Rochesters, Kevin Spencer and Friends, and of course, the Greenes. Just off Hwy 421 in Boone, it runs from Tuesday, Aug. 9th through Sat. Aug. 13th. At the Jubilee you will find lots of good food at concession stands.

Don't forget your sweater and lawn chairs. It gets cold at night. If it rains, there is a large tent that can accommodate a few thousand. You will have a great time. Tickets are purchased at the gate every night.

Go to Appalachian State Universtiy and look at the exhibits. They use to have one of the largest seashell collections in the United States. They have a cultural exhibt and museaum. Go spend the day in their library.

Tour the new modern art museaum.

Drive to the top of Howard's Knob and see if you can get above the clouds. Be warned its a foggy drive when it is raining.

Call the Humane Society and volunteer for the day. They can always use dog walkers.

Go to the small mall. The small mall has an interesting history as a bomb went off in it not long after it opened.

Go to the emporiums. They are located down town.

Go to Fat Cats and rent Dvds. They have a wide range of titles. Something for everyone.

Go eat lunch at the counter of Boone Drug. Listen to the local gossip.

Get on the Blue Ridge Parkway, go towards Blowing Rock, find Thunder Hill overlook (that may or may not be its real name) Park there and watch the lightening and listen to the thunder roll thru.

Then go on up the parkway till you hit the Moses Cone park. There is a museaum in the old house. A series of carriage trails you can walk. Its spooky in the rain. Watch for road apples as its a riding trail too.

And remember if you don't like the weather wait 5 mintues it will change. A normal summer day includes afternoon or late evening rain. And more is lost to waiting on rain than ever lost to rain.

Go to the Mast General Store. Ride up to Blowing Rock and take in all the quaint little shops.
