Staying in Johnson City. How is the drive?

We are planning a trip this February to the ski resorts in the area. Thing is we are on a budget and we found cheaper accommodations in Johnson City. How is the drive between Johnson City and Sugar Mtn / Beech Mtn / Boone? We will be driving to the ski resorts every morning and then back to Jonhson City at night. Thanks!

Sorry, but I think that's a really bad plan. The road is curvy and to Banner Elk is about an hour's drive on a good day....would be much worse if there's snow. I was in Boone earlier this week and paid around $45 for a hotel room.....how much cheaper do you need?

I agree. Johnson City is too far away.

Thanks for the reply. Where were you able to find a hotel for $45? Maybe it's because I'm planning to stay from Thursday to Sunday, but I haven't been able to find a night for $45 or closer.

For Saturday 18th for example, some of the cheapest options are around $95.

The drive is well over an hour, depending on weather and traffic. The gas used and time spent in the commute, is not worth the $$ savings.

You could check out Comfort Suites,, Fairfield Inn, Super Eight, all in Boone. Smoketree Lodge in Banner Elk.

It was during the week, last week at Country Inn and Suites in Boone, I paid $46 for a room with one King bed; I got the rate through a CI&S ad email. Nice room! :) When we were there it was 60 degrees and sunny; no skiers in sight! With snow falling/ temperatures dropping and Presidents week coming up, prices are much higher this week.

I also check Kayak.com and often find discounted rates there.... TA's hotel search is good too....But sometimes there's just very few discounts to be found. Best Wishes!
