Better to live in SC and commute to Charlotte?

We are planning a move from Michigan to the Charlotte area late this summer and have received info from both Charlotte and South Carolina areas. We really like the Fort Mill/ Tega Cay areas on paper, but would love some input comparing the hometown-feel and family-friendliness of both to the Charlotte area. School districts are a big concern for the future and could anyone recommend some 'affordable' preschool options for a 4 yr old? THANKS SO MUCH!

to FamOnTheMove-first of all...an early welcome to the area. Deciding where you want to live depends of course where your work will be, schools, etc. Of course both SC and NC have some areas that people desire more than others but overall you still will not find any more people that go out of their way to be friendly. We landed in Tega Cay because for us it had everything that we were looking for. Tega Cay is very family friendly with lots of sports activities for the kids. The beach club just had an open house this weekend, the lions club had a shrimp cookout at the fire station, we have Carolina Ski Team that perform for free on Friday nights during the summer at Windjammer Park on Lake Wylie, Fourth of July we have a land and boat parade plus much more. The area is growing fast, due to the closeness of Charlotte, Fort Mill schools, and with homes being a little cheaper. Tega Cay has now apx. 4,000 residents but that is expected to double in the next couple of years...even WalMart has found us and will more than likely be building their site off 160 and Gold Hill shortly. Still overall a wonderful place to be. Regarding preschools I'm not sure of their cost but there are several around the area. Many of the churches have them as well (for example Lakeshore Church) you might take a look at www.tegacaysc.org for links. A few other websites that might be of interest: www.idcide.com/citydata/sc/tega-cay.htm and the local newspaper www.fortmilltimes.com (which if you take a look at their website they have a newcomers guide and also a section that is called Living in 2025). Whatever you decide I wish you the best and if I can be of anymore help just post.
