Help a newbie plan her husband's 40th birthday surprise

Hello all!

I'm hoping you might be able to help me plan my husbands 40th birthday surprise trip to Charlotte. He is a HUGE Nascar fan. Unfortunately, I do not share his enthusiasm, so I don't have much info or expertise to go on.

We will be flying into Charlotte from Phoenix on a Thursday mid-morning and staying through Monday late afternoon. I will be renting a car. Sometime during this trip, I am planning on taking him to the Nascar Hall of Fame (giving him a personalized brick and the tickets/itinerary on his actual b-day). I'm sure he would also love to visit Lowe's Speedway and the Hendrick (spelling?) facilities.

I am need of hotel and restaurant advice, as well as whether or not it would even be possible to do all of this in such a short visit. I love the look of the Dunhill Hotel, but am unsure of the location.

Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated! All suggestions are welcome! I really want to make this a memorable trip.

Not familiar w/ Dunhill, but there are lots of hotels on Speedway (Bruton Smith) Blvd w/in a couple miles of the Speeday...nicest one being the Embassy Suites Resort and Spa. Hendrick Motors is near the Speedway and has a really nice tour. Speedway has tours and also the Richard Petty Driving Experience (which allows you to get in and drive stock car around the track, I think). Concord Mills has a NASCAR speed park w/ NASCAR gear and actual tracks to drive on. For a neat lunch, Quaker Steak has a racing theme on Speedway Blvd and really good wings.

Thank you so much for your reply! Lots more information for me to play with! I am off to do a little more research on hotels and will definitely check out the Embassy Suites. Thanks again!

The Dunhill is quite nice but maybe a fit far from your activities. The Embassy Suites & Spa is also quite nice but much closer. I'd really check out the tour of the speedway- my father in law loved it!

I second (or third) the Embassy Suites.

Here's a list of all race team shops in the area, some are open to visitors. http://www.examiner.com/x-7930-Charlotte-NASCAR-Examiner~y2009m7d15-NASCAR-101-Where-are-the-team-shops-located-around-North-Carolina

Also, not really NASCAR, but related...this was just announced from our local theme park "Carowinds" yesterday; "The Intimidator", should be open next spring around the same time that the NASCAR Hall of Fame finally opens.........http://www.thesunnews.com/business/story/1039201.html

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I really appreciate all your help. I did go ahead and book the Embassy Suites, so I can cross that off the to-do list. Seeing as we only will have 3 full days, do you think I could squeeze in these activities:

THURSDAY (arrive early afternoon):

Baggage/rental car/check-in

Dinner at Quaker Steak

FRIDAY:

Hendrick Motors

Lowe's Speedway

SATURDAY:

Nascar Hall of Fame

SUNDAY:

Carowinds (sp?)

Richard Petty Ridealong. They haven't released the 2010 dates just yet, so I am unsure if this is possible

MONDAY:

9 holes of golf

Depart for home in the afternoon

I'm going to take a look at the examiner link as well for a few ideas.

Thanks again! TA forums are so great because of such kind people like you!
