Family visiting soon. What should we take them to see?

My husband and I recently moved here from New England, where our families currently live. My family is coming to visit for Thanksgiving, and we'd like to show them the sights. The only problem is that we don't know the area very well. My dad is a history and yoga buff, and my mom would like to visit unique gift and home decor types of shops (not big box stores that she could go to at home). There are no children - just 5 adults, all of whom are on a somewhat limited budget. I'd love to go the Biltmore Estate but I'm not sure that it's feasible at this time.

What would you recommend we do? I appreciate any suggestions!

For a unique home decor store, try Black Lion. It is on Pineville Matthews Road near the hospital. It is a former Kmart store that rents out booths for home decor, furniture, and gifts. Lots of great decorating ideas here.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Boone, NC. While I can't post any specific shops, there are a number of attractions there, notably Grandfather mountain. There's also a Tangers outlet if you guys don't happen to find anything. We just went there for the first time (been living in NC for about 13 years now). It's cold, but not too bad compared to NE.

History - Kings Mountain National Military Park - 45 minutes west of Charlotte down I-85. A great, marked trail explaining the battle with monuments and media.

For "unique boutiqes and gift shops"....may want to check out Birkdale Village. Lots of shops, restaurants, etc... It's kind of like a town center type place that should be well decorated by now.

ncgator is correct Birkdale Village is decorated now and, believe it or not, on Friday, Saturday & Sunday evenings they have small snow machines operating around the Christmas tree! Birkdale Village is located just west of I77 ext 25 and there is also second Blacklion just east of the junction

You might also want to check out Latta Plantation lattaplantation.org/visit/special_events.sht… On 27&28 November they have a "Plantation Christmas" event during the day and on 5 December they have a "Candlelight Christmas" event. If you decide to visit on either the 27 or 28th make sure that you check out the Carolina Raptor Center which is housed in part of Latta Plantation - check out the following link for information on the programs they offer.

I saw that someone mentioned Boone as a possible destination. If mountain view is of interest, then Chimney Rock is much closer than Boone, and the area is very beautiful with a lake beneath the mountain.

As far as historic places are concerned, there are some interesting places in Winston Salem and in Greensboro, such as old Salem and the location of a civil war battle in Greensboro. There are other historic places, but the question is how far are you willing to drive, and if you're willing to stay one night in a motel.

Another possible attraction is the North Carolina Zoological Center (zoo) in Ashboro. I think it is not that far from Charlotte. I enjoyed visiting the place as an adult.
