quick help before the weather gets cold!

We have just checked into the westin which we chose having e mailed the hotel in advance to check their sun terrace would be open for our stay. They assured us it would be open until the end of Oct and guess what - its shut. Does anybody know of a country club/outdoor pool or lake with a beach which we could use to make the most of the end of summer sun - we are happy to pay.

Any suggestion would be so welcome. We have asked at reception but theydont know of anywhere.

Thanks

The only place I can think of....and I'm not sure if the outdoor pool is still open this late in the season, is the Ballantyne Hotel. They operate a day spa there and you can use hotel pools if you purchase some Spa services. www.theballantynehotel.com/OutdoorPool.cfm

Do you have any time and/or transportation to visit the S.C. coast while you're here? It's only 3.5 hours to Charleston SC area beaches.... the closest from Charlotte. It's beautiful and relatively cheap this time of year.

Myrtle Beach is just a bit longer drive, but still less than 4 hours; a number of oceanfront hotels have nice pools, some heated. There are great hotel deals to be found there this time of year.

Call first - their terrace should be open...

Andrew Jackson Park = nice area for a picnic by the lake.

You should also check why the sunroom at Westin is closed; it was open last Thanksgiving, I think.

I think Lake Norman might be a good place to try, but usually the outdoor pools close up around the first weekend of September here (Labor Day). Often there are still hot days afterwards, but that's sort of the unofficial end of summer. We Southerners like it to be HOT when we're swimming and sunbathing. Lots of times folks from the northern US will come down to our beaches in the spring and fall and go swimming when we wouldn't think of it. I think it would be fine to spread out a blanket and sunbathe at just about any public lake or beach, though. You might get a few quizzical looks, but we're pretty laid back.

In Oct, we're looking forward to changing leaves and pumpkins and Halloween rather than hanging out by the pool.

best of luck!!
