Where to stay with kids in NC to guarantee snow??

We r driving the weekend After Christmas with our three kids-(9,8 and 5) for 5 days to North Carolina- we booked the smokey mountain train but because we r driving from Florida..we are not familiar with the area or driving during ice/snow and would like suggestions on a town to stay in(preferably in a cabin) that is easy to get to but will have snow. it does not need to be near the smokey mountain railroad or ski areas-something quaint and cute area where kids can see and play in snow for a few days.

Thank You!!!

There's no way to guarantee snow anywhere in NC. It's usually cold enough to snow in the Northern NC mountains that time of year, but from time to time we've had entire seasons with warmer and drier than normal weather. Hope for snow... but plan to have fun no matter what...if there's not snow on the ground and/or it's too warm for snow, there are nice, family friendly activities for the family to enjoy throughout the area...here's one, Grandfather Mountain.. http://www.grandfather.com/ .

A good free place for kids to enjoy snow, even if Mother Nature isn't supplying, is Beech Mountain's sledding hill. They have snow guns and will keep snow on that hill all winter long unless the weather is totally not cooperating. beechmtn.com/things-to-do/…sledding

Yes, you'd need to go to a ski resort like Beech Mt or Sugar Mt to guarantee snow.

By the train, I presume you mean the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad in Bryson City. As far as accomodations, that is a very busy time of year...I suggest you book early. Bryson City is low elevation for the mountains, so snow is less likely. Maggie Valley is close by with higher elevation and better chance of snow. For the best chance of snow, from Maggie Valley drive up the mountain to Cataloochee Ski Area. If there is natural snow, there are many places around the Cataloochee Ranch to play in it. If not, there will be manmade snow at the ski resort, but you can't really get out into it without buying a lift ticket. You can enter the ski lodge without a lift ticket, but your access to the snow on the ski slopes is very limited.

As others have said, the area around Beech and Sugar Mountains has the best chance of natural snow, but that area is at least 3 hours from the railroad at Bryson City.

There is another ski resort, Wolf Ridge, about 30 minutes north of Asheville, but again you need a lift ticket to get out into the manmade snow.

There is simply no place in NC that we can guarantee you that there will be snow the week after Christmas. Even at the high elevation ski resorts, it may be too warm to make snow. On the other hand, you may drive into a blizzard or ice storm. Check the weather reports a few days before your trip.

Cannot guarantee snow, but the weather is cold enough, they will make snow at the ski resorts. Beech Mountain, Appalachian Mtn. Hawksnest and Sugar. Some of the slopes offer snow tubing also.

The area offers alternative activities for families also. Hope the following websites will help you.

For what you're looking for, the best bet is the town of Beech Mountain.

It's a friendly little ski resort town with a free sledding hill for kids (12 and under). The town gets a fair amount of natural snow, plus they have a snow gun on the sledding hill to keep it covered when Mother Nature doesn't. I believe the website is www.BeechMtn.com.

Unless it is unseasonably warm, there will be some snow for the kids on that sled hill. If not, there is also the ski resort - Beech Mountain Resort. They will have snow, and there is ice skating, too.

Good luck!
