First trip to Charlotte this coming April.. Renaissance?

My boyfriend is taking me to Charlotte for a birthday weekend in April.. I've never been there and need suggestions please! We are going to a show at the Ovens Auditorium and thinking of staying at the Renaissance in South Park. Is this a good area for shops and restaurants? I'd love suggestions on places to eat too!

Southpark is a great area for shopping and restaurants. One of my favorites is Cowfish - cool place!

Good location; hotel = just OK; personally, I prefer:

tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g49022-d100549-…

but I only stay once a year (New Year's Eve) as I live in CLT;

but I even prefer: http://www3.hilton.com/en/index.html (Double-Tree) & most TA reviews are not as good.

You have picked an excellent spot. Either the Regency or Doubletree Suites would be fine-they are practically across the street from each other and both within walking distance of the best shopping in Charlotte and at least a dozen restaurants are within a half mile. Some of my favorites, besides Cowfish, include Rooster's, George's, Upstream, Zebra's, etc.etc. for a nearby shopping experience, check out the Winestore which has great tastings on a frequent basis and the best prices in NC.

Hi - I'm not sure what your goals are for the trip or what you're interested in when you travel, but I would suggest that you look into the downtown area also.

Southpark is fine -- as a Charlotte resident, I spend a lot of time there -- but it's not necessarily somewhere I'd recommend for a visit to Charlotte. It's beautiful, the mall is great, etc., but there's nothing to do but shop and have dinner. If you're looking for any sort of nightlife, you'll be much better off downtown. There are restaurants/bars/clubs all around...many you can get to on foot. Of course, downtown Charlotte is not as vibrant as some urban areas and shopping is virtually nonexistent. However, you can go to Southpark and shop during the day, and come back downtown to have fun at night. :)

As for Ovens, it is just as easy to get to from downtown. In fact, it may be slightly closer than Southpark, but the difference is negligible.

So, if you are just looking for a low key weekend, go for Southpark. If you want a little more action, stay downtown.

My two cents!
