Things are slow this year.

This year I planned to go to the Cherokee and gatlinburg area in October when the wife had a week off from school. We are still going then but with the 100 degree temperatures this weekend and 105 to 110 heat index I decided that some cool mountain air would be needed soon. The wife is teaching summer school to pick up some extra cash and her schedule allows for use to get away for a long weekend around July 24.

So I called the lady who i usually rent a cabin from and she had one available for that weekend. While I was talking to her she said that business and tourist have been down this year. Worst than last year.

So my question is how has this economy effected your travel and how busy have the places you been to been.

I got a 2 bedroom cabin on Big Cove road. It is a basic cabin, nothing fancy but it is clean, has A/C and across the street from the river. It is located next to Big Dons tackle shop. Sycamore Log Cabins is the name. It is less than $100.00 per night and the wife likes it. If you want the number let me know.

When we go to Cherokee we usually tube in the river, fish a lot and goof off in the mountains. We will also do the tourist stuff some too.

Which area do you usually stay.

John,

In response to your original post, so far the economy hasn't affected my travel plans...much. We still plan to make the same number of trips to the mountains, but we're cutting out some spending. We're going to do more relaxation and outdoor fun this year.

Brad,

That is what we are doing. We are shopping harder for some deals and plan to do more stuff thta is free or cheap. I have figuired out the cheap and free stuff in Cherokee.

We where in Orlando for Sea World a cuople of weeks ago. There where a lot of people there but not as many as the trip 4 years ago.

Right now besides this trip to Cherokee we have a fall mountain trip planned, a weekend to Charleston to see Kenny Chesney and Thanksgiving in daytona for the rod run.

Betty,

I have not stayed at this hotel. Actully I have only stayed at only a few in Cherokee. Typically I will either camp or stay in a cabin. The Comfront Inn if it is the one I found for Cherokee is on the outer edge of town. It is on the highway to Bryson. It is only a few years old and looks good from the road.

i looked at the reviews on this sight and they where hit and miss. I think it was number 10 of 28.

When you go to Cherokee in the fall what are your plans? Seeing the colors, going to Harrahs or ?

If you are going for the casino it is on the opposite side of town but that is only about 5 miles.

I am heading up that way the end of the week for a few days of fishing and then again the first of Oct. to go to Gatlinburg and the park.

I don't know about Cherokee but I'm in Pigeon Forge right now and it's as busy as ever - traffic is bumper to bumper, stores are packed, the GSMNP is also crowded. The economy looks good on the TN side of the Smokies!

I was just looking at the rates for November and those are not bad. From the pictures the plac does not look bad. The reviews are hit and miss but that could be took with a grain of salt. I was in Florida the first of June and got a package deal. After booking the package I read the reviews of the hotel and was concerned. I told the wife that the reviews where mixed but we where only looking for a place to sleep. I travell with work some and i will tell you that 90 dollar romm in Orlando was a lot nicer than some 200 dollar plus rooms I have stayed in before.

The location of the hotel is on the edge of town, the opposite from the casino but only a few minutes drive. So the location is not bad. If I remember I will ride by the place this weekend and check it out from the outside.
