Elevator Closed!

Visitors to the park should be advised that the elevator that transports guest to the top of the "Chimney" is closed. It has been since November and as of May 28, no one was sure as to when it would open. The only way to reach the top is by stairs....470+ very steep stairs. Wish I had known this BEFORE arriving. lol

We were just there in early August and the elevator was still out of order. There is no sign at the park entrance to advise tourists that the elevator is out.

Wonder what the holdup is to repair the elevator? This was going to be a stop on our visit to Asheville but now it will not be included in our tour. The local chamber of commerce should look into this this, since it is a major tourist attraction listed on their website..

It's a state park. They should be held accountable since it is funded with tax dollars. Call Raleigh!

I spoke to both NC Parks Dept. and to Chimney Rock people. The problem is that there is not enough power for the elevators. They won't risk somebody getting trapped on the top. They are working for a fast solution.. In the meantime, all of our members planning a trip like myself should call this # 919.707.9300 and complain to the state. This is a major State tourist attraction posted on their tourism website for the area..

If you have difficulty walking there are other sites you can see. Personally, I'm not a fan of Chimney Rock for this reason — too commercial. I think the elevator should be reserved only for folks with special needs. But it is nice for the disabled or elderly. Grandfather Mountain also offers handicapped access if you're in need. Otherwise a little walking will do us all good.

Good point about the commercialism.. I could climb up the 500 steps but my wife is being treated for a knee problem. As photography is one of my hobbies, I would like to take that flag picture on the top. Lets keep our fingers crossed..

Check out Mt Mitchell (www.romanticasheville.com/mtmitchell.htm) or the Mile High Swinging Bridge at Grandfather Mountain near Boone/Blowing Rock. It's got a great view and is now handicapped accessible.

Also tons of overlooks off the Blue Ridge Parkway with incredible views. No steps or hiking necessary.
