Screened Porches

This will be our first time traveling to the outer banks / Corolla. Could anyone advise if a Screen Porch is a must have during July? I am worried about sitting out in the evenings and being a lovely little pests dinner. Any advice would be helpful. We are vacationing on July 10th. Thanks!

We have stayed in a rental home in South Nags Head several times. We enjoyed sitting on an open deck and never had any problems with insects.

Our stays were always in July.

It is really not possible to predict this, as so much of the bug problem is dictated by the winds, or lack there of. Many times when the winds die down, the bugs will get worse at night, also wind direction can have a big effect for both the flies at the beaches, and the moquitoes at night.

Make sure you have good bug spray for at night, and also for the beach.

Personally we love having a porch-not just when it is buggy, but when it is raining, too breezy, or hot. Not sure how many people are in your group or the ages, but we have always liked the option of having kids play games on the porch or for when older people need to get out of the heat.

The bugs are difficult to predict-with a porch you will not have to worry.

Thanks to all, we did finally book a house with a screened porch. Better safe than sorry!

The only time we've ever used a screened porch is when we've had steamed crabs. Most evenings (on the ocean side) we like to sit on the decks and watch the stars and are never bothered by bugs, but as others have pointed out, there have been the exceptions when the winds shifted and the bugs are loosed.
