small toddler things to do

We are making our second trip down to OBX this August, and this time our son will be 21 months. We plan to spend a lot of time at the pool at our rental house, and the beach, but looking for other activities. Last year we pretty much stayed close to the house because our son was only six months old.

Any suggestions - things to do, places to eat, any parks to go to, etc?

Thanks

We are also looking for places that are close by to Corolla - or within a half hour driving time at most.

There is a small playground at Timbuck II shops and another soundfront in Duck. The Duck pavillon soundfront also has children's story time( in Am) and musician's and magic time during the summer(check with the town of duck website for specific dates). There is a neat children's museum in Kitty Hawk (around MP 4)-not really close by but is great if it happesns to rain or they need a break from the sun(it's done in sections geared to OBX-like a lighthouse, boat to play in,airplane , etc.) Also, not close but nice is the aquarium in Manteo. My son is 2 1/2 and we'll be making his 5th trip in July so I have some experience as he's good on the beach for a while but also needs other activities.

If you look under trip advisors *things to do* in Corolla section and look at the Wild Horse Museum ratings my review of the museum is there from may 2011. It is a fun place especially that u could see a removed from the wild Spanish Mustang. Also we stay sounside in Ocean Hill directly off route 12 in Corolla. Behind the community pool is a walkway to a deck overlooking the sound. Take a loaf of bread and feed the snapping turtles off the deck. Also right there across from the pool is a nice swingset and climber area that has baby swings. The climber has sand surrounding it and our daughter loves playing with her sandtoys there. The ice cream truck usually comes through the neighborhood between 5 to 6pm.

Our granddaughter, aged 22 months, absolutely loved the NC aquarium in Manteo! We toured through it twice in one afternoon, stopping for a long time at the shark tank on each pass. (Evidently, sharks say "chomp, chomp," according to her.)

The Whalehead Club has huge grassy grounds, and you can have a picnic, go crabbing or launch your kayak for free. Plus there are various free events like kite flying on Tuesdays and the kid-friendly summer concert series on Thursdays. whaleheadclub.org/explore/currituck-heritage…

The Wildlife Education Center is nearby, and they have fun activities too. Both are right in Corolla, between Whalehead and Corolla Light.

Oh yeah, and you can climb the lighthouse. Sure to wear out your kid ;) Have fun!
