Duke University/Durham - information from locals

Hi everyone,

We live in Sydney, Australia and my son is applying for a scholarship to Duke University. He is interested in studying law or engineering. Whilst the Duke website is terrific I wondered if any locals could fill in the gaps for us - what is it like to live in Durham, what is the weather like, cost of living etc? Any comments or information from local residents would be appreciated - North Carolina is a long way from Sydney!

Many thanks

Bronwyn

Bronwyn,

First, good luck to you son on his scholarship application. Duke is a great school with a very good reputation. In terms of your questions, see below:

1. What's it like to live in Durham? Durham and the two sister cities (Raleigh and Chapel Hill) are called the Triangle and is one of the two major areas in North Carolina. There are many opportunities for arts/ culture, living areas, shopping, grocery, nightlife, restaurants etc. It's a college town as well as a good place for young professionals.

2. The weather is good for the US- Spring and Fall are very temperate (around 60-70 F), and winter is not too cold (around 40-50 F)- so walking or biking to class isn't an issue, though there is plenty of bus routes near the school if needed.

3. Cost of living is below average for the US. You can get more detailed info by going to www.citydata.com and searching Durham.

Like all cities, Durham has some 'bad' parts of town but all in all it is a very nice and affordable area to live.
