First Trip to Emerald Isle 7/7/13 to 7/14/13– kids ages 9 & 10
Arrived on Sunday around 11:00 am to no traffic coming on the island. Noticed some traffic leaving the island.
We stayed at Sound of the Seas, very nice place, Gated, Ocean Front with 2 pools (we never made it to the pool, kids had too much fun at the beach)
Generally, we tried to do activities each day in the mornings, have lunch at our place, then hit the beach every afternoon until we left for dinner around 6:00. Beach was very nice and not crowded at all. Weather was perfect in the mid to upper 80s with water temps in the low 80’s. Kids loved boogie boarding in the waves.
Sunday – move in and beach. Dinner at Rucker Johns in EI. Food was good. Kids enjoyed feeding the turtles.
Monday we did charter fishing for half a day out of Atlantic Beach. Caught about 40 fish – mostly Spanish Mackerel and Blue Fish. Kids had fun; we were fishing around Shackleford Banks and got to see the wild horses. We stayed in for dinner and cooked the fish we caught.
Tuesday morning we visited the Aquarium. It is very nice, the kids enjoyed the programs. Dinner at Riverside Restaurant in Swansboro – The food was excellent…probably the best we had during the week. Ghost crab hunting on the beach that night, the kids always enjoy this.
Wednesday morning we rented kayaks and explored the sound. Kids liked seeing all the birds, shrimp and crabs in the estuary. They liked shark tooth island, and the highlight was when we were able to paddle along with a pod of 5 to 10 dolphins… they came about 5 feet from the kayaks and just swam around us for about 15 to 20 minutes. Dinner was Pizza at Michangelo's in EI, very good. Go Karts after dinner in Atlantic Beach, all kids love go carts.
Thursday morning was using chicken on strings and butterfly nets to catch blue crabs on the sound side, kids are still talking about how much fun it was. Dinner was at Nicky’s in Swansboro. Very slow service and food was just ok. Put-Put in EI after dinner.
Friday was the only day we had some rain so we did the Maritime Museum in Beaufort, visited some shops and lunch at the The Spouter Inn Restaurant in Beaufort - excellent food and great views on the water. After the rain cleared we toured Fort Macon and shelling on the beach at Fort Macon. Dinner was at Amos Mosquitoes in Atlantic Beach - this was by far the best service we had the whole week. The kids loved this place too. For dessert they do a make your own smores at your table over a small flame using skewer sticks. Food was great and again the service was amazing.
Saturday the kids wanted to go blue crabbing again so we did. Dinner was at Crab’s Claw in Atlantic Beach. This is ocean front dining; we ate outside and enjoyed the sunset. We finished the evening with Put-Put in Atlantic Beach.
Check out Sunday morning around 7:30 am with absolutely no traffic leaving the island.
Overall we were very happy with EI. It is a great place for a family vacation. Plenty to do without the crowds of Myrtle beach. Water was way warmer than in Corolla plus less crowded. Much closer to Ohio than Hilton Head or Fla beaches.
