What to do after lighthouse?

We are staying in. Nags Head for a week in July. We've seen the Currituck and Bodie Island lights, so this year we are headed down to see Hatteras. Ideally, we'd like to do something else before heading back up the coast.

Any recommendations? I was thinking of stopping at Pea Island or one of the other trails north of Buxton, but we'd do that to explore with our boxer, but we can't take her in the lighthouse (understandably), so taking her seems to be a stretch, since the weather likely won't permit leaving her in the car while we climb.

We are two 29 yo, no kids, except for the pup. Looking for non big ticket things.

Not sure if dogs are allowed but the Grave yard of the Atlantic Museum is a nice place and or a trip to Ocracoke , you will be right by the ferry docks if you do this

Stop for a tour of the life saving station in Rodanthe it is free and there are different presentations from day to day. I agree with graveyard of Atlantic museum it is also free / donation.
