Hatteras Lighthouse

Last time I climbed to the top of the Hatteras lighthouse was before the move...what a view! Are you still able to do this?

Thanks

Yes! We did this past summer, and it was a beautiful view. You will soon also be able to climb the Bodie Island lighthouse.

I'm so excited. I'm planning to come back this summer to climb the Bodie Island Light.

There's a caveat: Ypu can climb the lighthouse, weather permitting. We waited until our last day to visit the lighthouse and were told it was closed due to the possibility of lightning. We were so disappointed.

More info:

you can get reservations for climbing to the top during the night, and a special one for the full moon nights. . We made reservations for a night time climb last year, and it was cancelled because of high winds. :( Look on their website for specific info and schedules. NOTE: you can only get tickets for the DAYTIME climbs on that day and there might be a wait for your tour time to begin. However, the tickets can be purchased for both the weekly night climbs and monthly full moon tours in person beginning two days before the tour.

There is a warning on their site for people with health issues because the 248 iron spiral stairs to the top equal climbing a 12 story building. The stairs have a handrail only on one side and a landing every 31 steps. There is no air conditioning. It may be noisy, humid, hot and dim inside the lighthouse and there is two-way traffic on the narrow stairs.

Also, you are not allowed to carry anyone up the stairs (this includes infants and children)
