Two similar towns I would suggest are Highlands, NC and Blowing Rock,NC. They are a good distance apart in the NC mountains...Highlands is a 2.5 - 3 hour drive from Atlanta in the southern NC mountains. while Blowing Rock is several hours further in the northen NC mountains.

Have you considered flying into Charlotte, NC (CLT) or Greensboro, NC (GSO)? Both would put you much closer to the mountains--about 2 hours drive to either Asheville or Blowing Rock/Boone. There are lots of small mountain towns you might consider visiting: Dillsboro, Bryson City, Waynesville, Sylva, Black Mountain (all of these are relatively close to Asheville), or you could visit the Blowing Rock/Boone area and take in the many attractions in that area like Grandfather Mountain, Moses Cone Manor, Linville Caverns, Linville Falls, etc.

Not sure if you have a specific route in mind, but you could fly into Charlotte, drive to the Asheville area where you could spend a few days exploring the towns noted above. Then take the Blue Ridge Parkway to Blowing Rock/Boone, taking in the attractions along the way (Mt. Mitchell, Craggy Gardens, Southern Highland Craft Guild, etc.) Spend a few days in the Boone/Blowing Rock area, then it's a short 1 1/2 drive back to Charlotte.

A couple of great resources. North Carolina Dept. of Transportation (www.ncdot.org) has a downloadable book of NC Scenic Byways ( http://www.ncdot.org/travel/scenic/ ). It is filled with driving routes laid out with markers along with maps of the small towns they pass through. The Blue Ridge parkway and a couple of other National Scenic Byways are also included in the info. Its a 190+ page booklet that you can down load for free.

Also, here is a link to some Heritage trails in NC http://www.ncartstrails.org/

Hope these help. I love traveling through NC. I have as a goal to have visited all 100 counties at least once in the next 5 years and be able to have enjoyed something special in each one!
