Memorial Day weekend getaway

Our family - 2 adults and 2 small boys ( 6 and 8) are planning to go visit next month. A family getaway, with some good time together. We are not into heavy hiking or too much physical activities. What would you recommend there?

Thanks,

D

Highlands is very laid back place. If they are going already, take an evening to check out the Scudders Antique Auction, very entertaining. Very little else to do in town except shop.

Ask someone about getting to Sunset Point to do a view of Sunset there. Worth the drive. It is down the main st and then up a dirt road. The info says to walk up dirt road, but that is hassle when heading back down. We drove up the narrow road and parked at top to view the sunset. Carry a blanket or some chairs.

Drive up the road toward Franklin and stop at Bridal Veil Falls (beside the road, you can drive under it) and Dry Falls (walk down and then behind the falls). A bit farther on, stop at Bust Your Bu## Falls, which is a great place to play in the water and you can slide down into the pool. Lots of fun there if warm enough. BTW, Franklin has several places where you can pan for gems.

Also, do a search for NC Waterfalls on net. There are many in the nearby area including one high one not too far off Whitewater Falls is nice. Another nearby one is Silver something near the road. Here is one site: romanticasheville.com/highlands_waterfalls.h…

You could drive over toward Cashiers. Do websearch for Pisgah National Forest and Cradle of Forestry. It is up a road that can be used to cut through from road to Cashiers up to Blue Ridge Parkway and then loop back. There is another falls where you can get in the water up along this pretty drive.

Go a bit farther than Franklin and head on up to Cherokee NC. Bet kids would like the kitschy tourist town that is home of Cherokee Indian Reservation of Eastern Band of Cherokees. You will be at the southern entrance to Great Smokey Mountains National Park, which has lots of neat stuff to see.

The Nantahalla River Gorge is not too far away and is really a beautiful place. Go the the Nantahalla Outdoor Center (NOC), it is the farthest one if coming from south. You can go rafting on the pretty easy river, this is really fun. Pretty drive anyway. For a long day you could drive up this way on your way to Cherokee.

Well, those are some thoughts. Feel free to ask specific questions ahd I will help if I can. You can ask on here or click my link to send a private message.

Enjoy
