I'm taking my mom to Highlands next week and would like to know the best place to have lunch while there for the day.

I realize this post is dated Sept. 2006, but I am

surprised by all the '0's I see next to peoples'

inquiries! No one in Highlands seems to want to

answer!

I am coming to Highlands next month and I just did

not learn much from this forum.

Thanks for reviving this topic. My mom and I ate at the Chick-Fil-A in Clayton on the way up to Highlands and had an ice cream in town when we got there.

Still don't know the best place to have lunch there.

rhododendron,

We are going in about 3 weeks, just for the day.

I want to visit the shops and if we have a good

lunch, I'll sure let you know!

Are you 'northeast' or 'northwest' GA? We may be

neighbors!

I hope you & your mom had a nice visit anyway.

I'm in northeast Georgia, close to Young Harris. We did have a nice day, my mom is getting up there in age so we couldn't shop as much as I would have liked.

Yes please, let me know if you find a good place to eat. There are some restaurant posts on this forum but they're a couple of years old now.

Hope you have a good time.

rhododendron,

Well, we made it to Highlands 2 weeks ago on a Sat.

It snowed most all day (very little on the ground)

but the wind would cut you in two! We ate lunch at

the Rib Shack BBQ restaurant. It is more upscale bbq

than what we're use to (have to keep up with that

Highland's image!). It has very nice booths and tables, but the very large black and white photos of

local people of days gone by were really special. We all had a bbq pork sandwich

which was good but not the best bbq I've ever had.

I had very good slaw and fries. My husband's baked

beans were quite good. We had wanted to eat at the

Fireside Restaurant (looked good online) but they

were closed for a month's vacation.

We did have some excellent ice cream at Kilwin's --

give them a Super A+!! We went into several of the

shops and looked around. It is a pretty, small

mountain town. I will look around more when I can

come in warmer weather. We plan to camp near Clayton

in the spring and may go back to Highlands then.

Thanks for the restaurant review. I love BBQ so will have to try that place. Will probably make a day trip over there one day in April after it warms up some.

Kilwin's is where we had our ice cream and it is good ice cream.

I just ate at the Fireside last Saturday. They served brunch until two so my young daughter was able to have pancakes. I must say the were the best I've ever tasted. She agreed and skipped the usual dousing of syrup.

The chicken broccoli soup was delicious and tasted homemade. Nice ambiance, too.

This was the restaurant that we wanted to try but

they were closed when we were there. Glad to see

your review and will hopefully get to try Fireside

next time.

10. Re: Best Place to Have Lunch in Highlands

No offense meant to anyone, but the reason no one in Highlands has answered is because we live here! We aren't going out in the middle of the work day for a champagne lunch! There are a few places that locals go including; Rib Shack, Pescados, Don Leons, Wild Thyme and Fressers. These aren't the fanciest places but they are consistently good and you can usually get a lunch entree for less than $15. I think Pescados is the only one that doesn't (at least) serve wine. Kilwins is definately good ice cream but SweetTreats is another good place that also offers frozen yogurt for us perpetual dieters. I wouldn't suggest SweetTreats for a meal though - it is overpriced and the people on the cafe side (in my experience) are not that friendly. Hope this helps someone!
