Outer Banks Which Town is best??

Hi,

Starting my "home work" on a vacation next year, been to Outer Banks about 15 yrs ago. Rented a private home (beach Front) which at that time was only $900.00 for the last week in May.

Cant for the love of me recall it's location but I do recall the trip down the shore road that passes through the Outer Banks running North to South and saw a huge difference from one town to the next.

Does anyone have an oppinion on a area along the south beach in The Outer Banks that has the best beachfront and dunes?

Thanks

Well, when you talk about your trip down the shore...do you mean when you crossed the bridge you went south? 15 years ago there was a huge difference going north between the more built up areas, a bit less so Duck, and much less built up Corolla.

Hi,

We were near the hatteras (sp?) light house, just north of it in a beach house on the beach. It has been what seems like a lifetime since I drove through the outer banks. I recall one main road, there was some traffic and it ran down the middle of the outer banks. I remember the Northern most area had older beach homes, many right on top of the road. Then the further south we went the houses were newer. I stayed in a older house surounded by new fancy huge homes. I go online and I can find all the rental sites and pics but I am not sure which town has the best beach front (best in my opinion is a deaper beach with big grass covered dunes between the beach and where the ocean row of home are set. Like anything else, without some direction on where to begin the task of finding a great place to stay (esp. since some of these homes rent for over $4,000.00 a week). I am sort of thinking about a home rental instead of a hotel just for the sake of the added privacy.

Any input would be great, Thanks

Sounds like you were possibly around the Buxton area. That's a popular place and still nothing like the Nags Head area. Visitors also like the Salvo area. You will see change since your visit 15 years ago, but if you prefer less people, you will probably still enjoy visiting that area.

All the villages on Hatteras Island will have nice beaches and the big, high dunes you have to cross. The Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo area is closest to NH/KH if you were planning on venturing up that way for some reason. Most of the houses are newer and if you stay in the north part of Rodanthe, most of those homes give you both the ocean and sound view.

Avon is next down the coast and is the largest village with a real grocery store. There are alot of OF homes to chose from.

Next is Buxton where the lighthouse is. Not as many OF options here.

Frisco is one of my favorite places to stay at. At the southern end there is a small cluster of homes that sits on one of the narrowest parts of Hatteras. The home here are nice but not too expensive.

Last but not least is Hatteras. Most of the homes here are older, but they have built some spectacular OF homes over the past several years.

Personally I don't think you can wrong with any of the villages. Just call the rental companies and see if you can find a house that suites you and whichever village it happens to be in...well so beit.

Have a good trip.

I have to say I'm an Ocracoke Island girl. Depending on what you would like to do, I strongly suggest that you look into Ocracoke. I love the area because you can abandon the car and rent a bike. It is enjoyable to ride through the town with the wind blowing in your face. You can also go kayaking in the harbor or piddle around in the local island shops. The food on the island is fantastic, with Howard's Pub and the Back Porch Restaurant being the favorite eateries. You can easily hop on the ferry and head up to the Buxton area around Cape Hatteras.

Be forewarned: Ocracoke is not easy to get to, but that is part of its charm.

Enjoy your trip!

Don't rent from Carolina Designs...there cleaning crew, if you can call them that, is horrible!!!!

If we went back, we would try Elan Rentals, and rent in Corolla.

Corolla is a private beach, and the houses are better taken care of.

Keep going south and don't stop 'till you get to Ocracoke, a beautiful charming town full of character with long sandy deserted, well in May anyway, beaches.

I was disapointed with the rest of the Outer Banks, It just seemed to be one long strip developement with no character. All the beaches are however great, although the water was too cold to swim in north of Nags Head in May.

I'm another Ocracoke girl! You can only get there by ferry, and their is little development (no chains). It is a quaint village and the best way to get on the beach is by 4WD.

However, you will not find beach front homes for rent in Ocracoke, as that is all National Wildlife Preserve. Most of the rental homes are around the town/village area.

If you are looking for beach front rentals, then I would try Avon, Buxton, or Hatteras Island.

If you are looking to be closer to chains, and action, then I would go up to Duck.
