I like Surf Side for a short stay . If you staying a week I would suggest a cottage but that is up to you. Nags Head is a great place to stay the first time you can venture out in both directions from there every day .Take a day trip to Ocracoke and hit all the light houses on the way down. If you Have 4x4 will get you on the beach in some areas too.

Hope your trip goes well .

Agree with the above post on both points. Surf Side is great, and they only have a 2 night minimum (as oposed to the usual 3 night here). Also, if you are stying a full week, I would see if there is a cottage that would work. It can save a lot in the end, as you can easily eat some meals at the home, and have things like a deck, BBQ, etc. There are cottages of all sizes, and price ranges, and if you don't have to have oceanfront there are lots of reasonable places to rent. For rental companies, I would try Joe Lamb or Village. For the Nags Head area they will both have good inventory, and both have great reputations. I live here, and always recommend these 2 for friends and extended family.

As you drive down the beach road through Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, you will not really be aware of a change in towns (unless you happen to see the sign). So don't hesitate to book a place in either town. Restaurants, shops, and activities are convenient to either location.

I agree with previous posters-if you can stay a whole week, rent a house, but be sure to check out how far to beach access (unless you don't plan to beach it every day). Some houses don't have deeded access and you have to walk quite a distance to a public access point.

You can find rental links here, and you also can click on hotels and motels.

I think renting a house is best depending upon how many people are in your party. I've stayed in the Village of Nags Head in an oceanfront 8 bedroom and loved it. I like Village Realty best - their staff is the most reliable. I like Colony IV for a hotel and the Croatan Surf Club for a condo rental option both of these options are in Kill Devil Hills.

Sorry to jump on this but I am coming to stay for 5 days with just me and my boyfriend, would you suggest a beach rental raher than a hotel.

We want a good base to explore the whole area and most importantly do windsurfing, woudl you say Nags Head is a good base. My research has shown Hatteras as a good spot?
