Nags Head Vacation

My whole family will be on vacation in Nags Head the first week of June. This will be the first time we've been to this area. We've rented a large house through Prudential Resort Realty. We are on Beach Rd. near MP 16. Any comments or hints on rental co. would be appreciated. Suggestions for better restaurants and grocery shopping/fresh fish markets is also needed.

Seamark is your best bet for a good grocery store in the mall at MP14 across from the beach road..Take bikes..up at that end the paths are well maintained and the KDH bike shop can give you a map for nice paths behind the monument etc..Also, do not miss Manteo for a small 1/2 day trip..a great coffee shop, book store and fesitval area to bike ..the paths are great..over the swamp and can go all the way to the end of the island to the Lost Colony outdoor play grounds..also visit Elizabethan Gardens..An all day road trip is to Ocracoke that takes about 2 hours, but you pass the Light House at Hatteras and you ride a 45 minute ferry..be sure to take bread for the gulls..to the small island of Ocracoke..There you can rent bikes and have a great exploring time, great coffee house that will probably feature folks from last nights band at Howards Pub..Plan who will drive home, because this place is seductive and will capture your spirit and you have 2 hrs to get home!! Places to eat at your end (we are at MP4)Sam and Omies..a locals and fisherman's hang out..Good Life Gormet and the Beach Bread Company are good lunch places..in Kitty Hawk and KDH..More fine dining north..Hope you enjoy!!MBear

Check the Duck forum here and see Duck in the off season on page 1 now. Myself and several others replied to that one with many other area suggestions in addition to the ones above.

Whalebone Seafood Market is right near you on the bypass. There is also a Food Lion nearby.

If you do not own bikes, you can reserve them ahead of time from rental companies there. They'll even deliver them and pick them up at the end of your trip.

We have vacationed at MP 10 for about 5 years and have found several outstanding restaurants. Try the "Flying Fish"; excellent seafood and beef mp 9. "Owens" is a long standing family restaurant with excellent food mp 12. More casual dining at the "Red Drum".

A local beach bar/restaurant with excellent caribbean seafood is "Tortugas" on Rt 6 mp 10. Very casual, beachy with license plates from everywhere hanging from the roof beams. Gets very crowded about 7pm.

For regular groceries, we preferred the Food Lion next to the SeaMark (MP 15 or so). The Food Lion was very modern and had everything we would find at home; the Seamark was much older.

A great place near you at MP 16 1/2 is Dune Burger. We don't eat red meat anymore and love their veggie burgers but do remember how mouth watering the real thing was, too. A great place to ride your bike for a quick and yummy lunch. Have fun!

Thank you so much for the wealth of information. Since everyone is so helpful, how about a good bakery that makes homemade desserts etc. ?? Any suggestions there ?
