nagshead mile post 17 1/4 good location?

I am considering a house at this mp...is it a good location? close to grocery stores, restaurants, activities and shopping?...I don't like to stay somewhere when I am far away from everything...so just want to make sure it is not far away from things..

thanks!

You would be a little less than a mile south of the US-158/NC-12 junction, so you would be within a reasonable walk or an extremely short drive to the things you mention. Restaurants are plentiful starting at about mile 16 1/2 all the way up through Kitty Hawk, and even going west (technically south as indicated by the signs) on US-158. In fact, right at the junction (MP 16 1/2) is Sam and Omies, Owens, a small grocery store, a burger stand, Jeanette's Pier and an ice cream shop. We stayed at MP 16 1/2 last year and walked to a number of places. The Wright Brothers Memorial and Jockeys Ridge are within a 10 to 20 minute drive north as well.

Technically this is South Nags Head, which is IMO the best area to be in if you like a less commercial area (and aren't on Hatteras Island). The beach has been widened here and it is less crowded than beaches in KH, KDH, and NH. There are fewer houses and no commercial establishments other than the Outer Banks Pier which has a nice outdoor bar & grill: http://fishingunlimited.net/

Two of our favorite restaurants are reasonably close: Owens - http://www.owensrestaurant.com/ and Miller's Waterfront - http://www.millerswaterfront.com/

There are other restaurants on the Manteo Causeway and grocery stores within 3 or 4 miles in Nags Head. You won't be isolated, but it will be much more quiet than the areas further north. We like this area alot.

I have to concur with Owens. We had a great experience last year. I strongly recommend it. Millers was on the short list, but ran out of days.

Truth is that any spot north of the Oregon Inlet Bridge you'll have plenty of restaurants and shopping. The beach has been fully developed all the way down to the start of the wildlife preserve. 20 years ago this was not the case but is now. To the listed restaurants above try out Basnights, Darrel's in Manteo, and check out one of few remaining fishing villages in Wancheese and eat at Fishermans Warf.

we were looking at homes closer to the preserve and found some pools/decks with screens -- are bugs bad in this area due to proximity to the wetlands?

Anytime the wilds blow from the west there can be bugs blown over here. Ground level is worse that on the top deck and after weeks of steady rain. A screened porch is nice but not essential in South Nags Head. There are areas that are much worse.
