Just back from another terrific trip to Ocracoke. The island seems much quieter than usual. Hotels are busy but the houses not so much. Perhaps people are opting for shorter stays than a week long rental. The bugs were spectacular-the worst I have seen in years-it is the same thing here in Va Beach as a result of the rain. The bugs act like Deet is an appetizer!
30 minute wait from Hatteras-no wait on the return trip, however we did leave on a Monday.
Ate at Dajio (formally The Pelican) one afternoon for 15cent shrimp. The new owners are very nice and have really gone out of the way to spruce the place up. The inside looked refreshed and the menu interesting, but pricey. Locals we know have said it is very good for dinner-but noted the price.
Enjoyed a rainy evening on the porch at Creekside listening to some live music. Food was OK, but overall experience fun.
Howard's was typical, although I noticed that the fish sandwiches here and at Jason's were so much smaller than usual-I was left hungry-maybe a sign of the economy? Still enjoyed the meal.
Best meal by far was Cafe Atlantic-flounder augratin with salad, potatoe, fresh veggies-all included-just wonderful, service superb.
Coffee Company as always was crowded-get there early-like 7:30. Try thier coffee cake.
Also had a great homemade egg and cheese biscuit at Fig Tree/Sweet Tooth.
Favorite way to finish the trip is breakfast at the Pony Island-am still full from the Salsa Eggs!
The beach was beautiful, currents very strong. Off Ramp 72 to the right the fence is about 500 yards away. This year you can actually walk on some areas that are roped off. We were able to go about 1 mile until the next fence.
Some stores have changed hands or moved locations. Most have reduced prices-please consider shopping if you visit-things are tough there, plus you can really get some good deals on clothing and gifts.
Can't wait for our next visit!
