There is the Bentonville Battle Field which has reinactments etc so that could be fun.

The North Carolina Museum is excellent. IT gives a detailed history of the state is a very interesting way. There are videos, interactive things and good reading.

The Omstead National Park is also a must go. They have great hiking trails with lakes, wildlife and just plain good walking.

Walking around the capital is also fun, statues galore of confederate hypocrites

I think Travelergirl was refering to the NC Museum of Hisory. The NC Museum of Art is also quite good and is accessible to the Greenway which is very extensive and well done.. Mordecai House and park, near downtown includes several structures and is pretty nice. It is also near the Oakwiood nhistoric neighborhood which is a nice area for a walk.. Another is the Hayes-Barton neighborhood, particularly Cowper and Harvey Streets. It has the advantage of bordering the Five Points shopping area where you can get a meal or a drink

I would spend one day in Durham. You can take a tour of Duke Homestead, a National historic landmark. Next head over to Bennett Place, the site of the negotiation for the Civil War's largest troop surrender. Lastly Historic Stagville, where you can find remnants of one of the largest plantations of the pre-Civil War South and you can learn about plantation and slavery life. Durham has become a foodie town so there is no shortage of good eating spots for lunch or dinner. Visiting Duke chapel and gardens is always a highlight. http://www.nchistoricsites.org https://gardens.duke.edu/ http://chapel.duke.edu/

A tour of the state capital in Raleigh is worthwhile. From there you can head over to North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences (free) and the North Carolina Museum of History (free), located in downtown Raleigh's Capital District. In the afternoon head over to NC Museum of Art visit the free museum and walk the Museum Park trails afterwards. Pickup a trail map a wander through through natural areas and commissioned works of art. The museum also has a nice restaurant for lunch or dinner.
