What to do in NC this winter?

I'm taking my boyfriend on a surprise trip in February to see his beloved Tar Heels play Duke. We'll have 4 days in the Research Triangle Area, although I am planning on taking one of those days to drive down to Wilmington. Besides touring UNC and going to the basketball museum, what else is a 'don't miss' in the area? Also, what kind of weather do you typically have in February? Thanks in advance!

If he likes beer, go to the Flying Saucer in Raleigh. Awesome place!!

As far as the weather.....it will be very COLD!! We also have the potential for severe winter weather in Feb.

He is definitely a beer lover, so that place is perfect for him. Thanks for the suggestion! As for the weather, I've looked at the average temps, and they don't seem too bad. But we're from the Great Plains, so we're used to negative wind chills and tons of snow in the winter ;)

Ehhh, weather… It could be cold, it might not. It's really very erratic. I've seen 70 degree days in January and certainly 60s in Feb. I've also seen snowstorms and ice storms in Feb. It's anybody's guess right now, but pack a jacket for sure and maybe you'll get lucky and get one of the warm winter days instead. You are far more likely to see 50s than snow, but snow is always a possibility in Feb. The record high in Chapel Hill for Feb 12th is 78 and the record low is 9. Neither one of those temps surprises me at all, so just be prepared for anything. The only season with consistent weather in NC is summer, and then it's hot.

Plenty of good beer in Chapel Hill. No need to go to Raleigh for that, although I'm sure the Flying Saucer is nice. Check out Top of the Hill Brewery and Distillery http://thetopofthehill.com where you can get a bird's eye view of Franklin St from the deck. Also Carolina Brewery on West Franklin has good eats and brews, too http://carolinabrewery.com . Beer Study is a great dive bar/beer shop with an extensive selection of beers from all over: http://www.beerstudy.com . Tyler's Taproom in Carrboro (the original Tyler's) has a nice selection of food and beverages also: www.tylerstaproom.com/locations/carrboro/ . Nearby is a new brewery, Steel String Brewery http://steelstringbrewery.com .

Tons of great restaurants in CH/Carrboro, too. You might check out Crook's Corner, Lantern, Acme, Southern Rail.
