Is snorkeling in Milos safe from sharks?

About to spend a week in Milos with my Girlfriend, can anyone put her mind at ease about sharks? as Greece seems to be surrounded by great whites!? Statistics such as 'rare' don't seem to convince her.

People dive in the Greek islands all the time, among great whites?

Any useful response would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi

I would say the only sharks you'll be bitten by are the ones in Oia, Santorini - where they charge €10.00 for 2 cups of cold coffee, otherwise you'll have a great time.

We don't have sharks in Greece or in the Mediterannean Sea, at least at a substantial number that would raise any measurable problem of public safety.

Extremely rare means extremely rare, as in one attack every 20 - 30 years.

That makes 1 attack for over 225 million visitors. Odds for getting an injury on our own home are bigger.

Definitely not whites here. We have sharkoids / that means shark family fishes that don't attack people but eat plagkton.

the increasingly rare animal has been spotted in the Mediterranean. Some experts believe that the Mediterranean is a nursery where great white sharks give birth and raise their young.

Not to worry, most of the sharks in Greek waters are Gummy Sharks. They are a very rare breed, only give you a nasty suck.

A lot more sharks in UK waters than Greece, mostly Porbeagles (can get very big), plus Makoes and Threshers, with the blue sharks off Cornwall. No record of anyone being hurt though a scuba diver bumped into one a few years ago and was grazed by the rough skin. Some very good sport shark fishing in the Autumn off West Wales.I heard that sharks can get more aggressive in warmer water (roll on global warming)

Obviously the odd fish comes through the Suez Canal , but I believe the breeding theory was knocked on the head years ago.

Some large huss and tope are caught in Kalamata Bay, always amused by the tavernas making up names for the menu.
