Visiting the West region Trapani, Marsala & Mazara del Vallo

We will be based in Palermo in May of this yr. & have free time for visit to the above cities before our tour starts. I thought I'd rent a car & based on previous posts, at the airport. But, are there things worth visiting in this area of Sicily? Would it be worth the time, cost & effort? Would be be best to stay overnight somewhere? Any suggestions on where to go & stay would be most welcome.

It depends on what you like and waht you want to see. Why did you pick those towns? How long do you want to spend?

I spent 2 weeks in western Sicily in Feb 2010. We visited Segesta, Erice, Zingaro Natrue preserve, Selinunte, Marsala, Mozia, and Agrigento. We wet to Trapani for a short time but had trouble with our lodging arrangements and then left.

Welcome to Sicily Alan O!

May is a lovely month to visit Sicily!

You could maximise your car time with a car, and yes, hire the car at Palermo's airport.

Segesta, Erice and Selinunte are the top attractions in Western Sicily.

Trapani has the most convenient public transport in Western Sicily, but surely with limited time, you would appreciate hiring a car, but if you were to decide against the car hire, you could take Interbus from Palermo to Trapani (2 hours), and then overnight in Trapani. Erice is easily reached from Trapani via AST bus or funvia.

Trapani itself is low on attractions, even if a convenient base. If interested in wines, you might visit the cantine in Marsala, and also combine Marsala with a visit to Mozia and the saltpans located between Trapani and Marsala. Mazara del Vallo is a colourful town, but depending on your interests, you might better enjoy Segesta or Erice.
