weekends of season with reliable snow? cheap/cheerful accom?

Hi there,

I'm planning a trip to Mt Buller this coming snow season with a group of friends. I'd like to pick a weekend where there is a good chance we'll have some good snow but also don't want to be up there during super busy interschools weekends.

Can anyone suggest a few weekends that might work? (obviously I'm discounting June)

We are also looking for cheap accommodation for a group of 6-8 people. Somewhere that has a lounge space, a kitchen to cook ect. We are a group of mid 20 year olds so we don't want to intrude on any family oriented lodges. I was considering the Buller backpackers but though someone may have other suggestions......?

Sophie,

How about trying the websites of the Mt Buller chalets and see what they say, rather than have some one else do the leg work for you.

Plus, if you are from Melbourne you would know the impossibility of predicting the weather.

August is the month most likely to have a decent snow cover, no guarantees that the conditions will be great though.

You are going to do a lot better both cost and crowd wise if you could manage to go mid week rather than on the weekend.

You could also try Mansfield as a base. Staying in the backpackers there and driving or taking the bus up to Buller each morning is cheaper than staying on mountain.

Agree that late July/August are the best beys for good snow cover. But it all comes down to the season.

Generally the best snow is in July and August but you pay a premium during those months. The exception being after the South Australia holidays. During this time there is a lull midweek and you can get some great deals as long as you are prepared to miss out on staying the weekend.

Generally the slopes are quiet and you get excellent snow cover.

Every year is different so keep an eye on the forecasts and the snow depth.

There are a few good reasonably priced places to stay on Mt Buller for a smaller group of 2 to four people you can often get into one of the clubs which has rates from $75.00 per night per person with shared facilities if you want to pay more then you can get a room from $120.00 per night.

Check out the Mt Buller website for these. www.mtbuller.com.au

A cheap option is to book an apartment. At first they look expensive but for a group of 8 they often work out to around $100 per night have their own kitchen and lounge areas.

Enzian Hotel has a few of these and is in a nice position close to the village centre or if you can ski well you can literally ski out from the hotel. Not recommended for beginners though.
