Esperence to Wave Rock

Hi, We would like to drive from Esperence to Wave Rock in February, stay overnight and back to Esperence the next day. Is the only accommodation in Hyden or is there any other along the way?

Hi Woywoy

All I can say is, you must really like driving!

There are places to stay along the way but basically you are right in the region of small rural towns that love wheat and sheep farming - thrilling stuff if you're into the detail of farming. Any of the small towns along the way will have some kind of accommodation, really depends if you're fussy or not!

Yes Hyden. You know it is going to be really hot there in February.

Thank you, don't really like driving that much but wanted to see Wave Rock. We have done as far as Albany before and are flying into Kalgoorlie 2 days busing it to Esperence picking up a car in Esperence for 5 days and then flying out of Esperence. Not my choice this time of year but attending a wedding in Perth. Didn't want to do north because of the cyclone season so this completes the south part.

You would usually have around 5 days advance warning of a potential cyclone - they're not that frequent so may be its worth looking into doing some exploring north of Perth - Exmouth is a short flight with quite a lot to do when you get there if you are hiring a car.

But of course there is plenty to look at in and around Esperance too, beautiful national parks and beaches.

To drive to Hyden and back in one day would really be quite feasible if you could get away reasonably early - its only four hours each way from Esperance and you would probably only need to spend an hour or 2 at the most there, especially in February heat. From experience, you would only need to be at Wave Rock for max one hour. There are a few other things to see and do nearby but they are not that compelling especially if its 40 degrees..

There is Hopetoun, although it actually adds 30 minutes each way to your trip (turn off at Ravensthorpe).

Its worth going to these days with your (2WD?) hire car as they have recently sealed the first 25km of road into Fitzgerald River National Park. The Southern Ocean might moderate the temperatures a bit, even in February, and on a sunny day the many beaches and inlets at this end of the park will be sparkling. The East Mount Barren walk is a cracking shortish walk (under 2hrs return) with great views over beaches, cliffs and hills. Lots of attractions close to town.

Hopetoun itself is a small town with a handful of cafes, a pub and a few accomodation options (Hopetoun Chalets recommended). Its right on the beach.

Don't ask me why, but I've ended up staying the night three times in Hyden. If you end up doing that then sunset either on top of Wave Rock or at the salt Lake Magic (next to the Wave Rock Resort) can be nice. But otherwise its not too exciting a place to stay (nor is anywhere else on the route that I can think of).

Should make clear that Ravensthorpe (couple of hours out of Hyden) and Lake King (just over an hour out of Hyden) both have limited accommodation options too, so they are the other alternatives.
