Hi there,

Can only help with Galle:

* Mama's (famous rooftop terrace)

* Rampart (quite okay, but do pick an evening without too many tour groups)

These two in Fort

* South Ceylon (opposite bus stand), decent local food

And of course the most expensive, I'd say overpriced, but still quite good restaurants of Amangalla and Galle Fort boutique hotels in Fort.

All the best,

We had a lovely reasonably priced meal at The golden mile restaurant on the beach and the Loon Too alongside it was a bit expensive but very tasty. We ate at the Mount Lavina Hotel poolside and it was very disappointing. Mount Lavinia also offers a buffet at lunch or evening but was a bit on the pricey sideWe also had breakfast at the Palm Beach Hotel and the menu at lunch time was good value but whether it was because they had a wedding on the food served at lunchtime was stone cold. They did offer to reheat it but as we were off to the airport and didnt have time.

Recommendation for Mt. Lavinia area ... try "Breeze", a restaurant mainly specialising in seafood along the beach front. The food and atmosphere was excellent in this large place, set on two levels and with the option to sit inside or out.

Agree with Sue, 'Breeze' is a very good fish restaurant, a little more upmarket than most. If you want to take a taxi, you could go to Wellawatte and try The Beach Wadiya. This is a fish restaurant right on the beach serving simply cooked fresh fish. It became very trendy after a series of high-profile guests, including Princess Anne and Hollywood stars, went there and of course the prices went up. Also in Wellawatte is a real wildcard, visited by Rick Stein in his Asian Odyssey series. He said it served the best crab curry he had ever eaten. It is very much a local restaurant, very busy and very basic but the food was good and extremely cheap - I think I paid less than £5 for three. It is called The New Jaffna Eating House (Jaal Kaday) and is on Station Road, near the junction with the Galle Road.

If you want a really authentic experience, then this is it.
