Is it better to buy currency whilst in Bulgaria or before you go
Buy some here to last you until you can get to a bank in SB. Do not go to travel agent tho, go to a ramsden if you have one.
Starling and revolut prepaid cards are also good options.
Rates for exchanging cash in Bulgaria are normally better than in UK, but the gap has decreased in recent years as more places in UK have joined the market and created more competition e.g. pawnbrokers. This year some UK pawnbrokers are the same or better than Crown exchange on some days
Just get your starter money in UK get the balance in Sunnybeach.
Very few places hold Lev in stock so give a few days notice about how much you want.
Worst UK rates are travel agents, banks and the Post Office.
In Sunnybeach the best rates are “over the counter” in banks
Pros; Best rate. nobody is skimming the rate for their own profit
Cons; Remember to take your passport, limited opening hours
Next, stick your bank card in an ATM.
Pros; same rate as bank counter, available 24/7, no need to lug large wads of cash while travelling.
Cons; Your bank may make a charge for using a machine abroad some are free, some make a small charge which is offset by the better rates you get, others charge silly fees, so ask your bank before you go
Next,Crown Exchange and some hotels
Pros; the rate on the board outside is the rate you get. Dozens of locations all over the resort
Cons; slightly lower rates than bank and ATMs as they have overheads and need a little profit too.
NB. Cash only here, they will accept your debit /credit card but charge 4% for using them plus your home bank charge.
Next, Other hotels
Pros; same as crown
Cons; bigger skim off the bank rates to get more profit.
Next, Other Exchange booths
Cons; the rate on the board may not be the rate you get, hidden fees and commissions.
Never change with a stranger who may approach you as you wait in a queue at any of the above they are out to scam you!
For Scots and N. Irish travellers make sure you take Bank of England notes as Scots and Irish notes get a far lower rate.
NB Balkan airways totally refuse these notes for in flight purchases.
Make sure your B of E notes are in good condition, no rips, tears or writing on them.
Pre pay cards…… be very careful to read all the small print, some cards are not suitable for exchanging to Lev.
The Starling card is getting rave reviews for it’s ease of use, no fee usage and getting the current mastercard rate which is often even higher than the banks.
