room safes????

We have booked a week in August in the Golden section at the Bahia Principe Akumal. Does anyone know if we have to pay for the use of the safe in the Golden section??? After reading some reviews, I see where they are saying you do have to pay for the safe in the regular Akumal section, but have not read about the Golden section. Also was wondering do we get special transportation from the airport with the Golden package??

Thx so much for all your help!!!

The safe in the golden section will cost approx. $4 U.S. per day or 50 pesos and you do not get special transportation from the airport

Keep in mind that at the Bahia hotels in the Mayan the safe and room are operated by a key. Don't keep the safe key with the room key as the room key has the room number stamped on it and if you lose it the finder will have access to your room and safe.

Yes, the GBP has those horrible safes with metal keys...just ANOTHER thing you have to keep up with when you leave the room. I don't know why all resorts don't just upgrade to the nice electronic safes where you choose your own code!

If you booked the hotel on your own and not through a tour company then you will have to pay for the safe and arrange your own transportation from the airport.

Some tour companies cover the cost of the safe as a perk for their clients.

If you do pay for the safe yourself, pay in pesos, you will get a much better rate than US$. We used our mastercard and for 5 days it came out to $21 CDN.

Many people prefer to arrange private transportation from the airport instead of taking the shuttle offered by their tour company anyhow - just to save some time since the Bahia is one of the furthest resorts that people get dropped off at.

One upside of having actual keys is that you're the only one who can get in. This is the reason they charge so much if you lose the key -- they have to replace the entire lock because no one else can open it.

most resorts have duplicate keys

we have always been able to get a 2nd key when there are 2-3 of us sharing a room

Last year there was a BIG stink about the push button safes, at other resorts, that were super simple to BREAK into. It appears that the safes with keys are much, much better!!! The key is a minor inconvenience ... but much better than loosing everything in your room safe I bet!

There is a clip somewhere here on the internet of someone breaking into the electronic safes in under a minute.
