Look for a thread further down the page regarding this - we were just discussing it earlier today.

We always stop between the airport and Akumal at an ATM and get pesos.

Usually near where we pick up our rental car.

You get more bang for your buck/peso when using them for purchases and we don't like to inconvenience the locals by tipping them with USD.

Also, US coins are of no use to the locals.

The travel agencies don't know what they're talking about, as usual.

those of us that actually go there know that usd is just fine. pesos makes more sense but usd does work. Travel agents are ignorant of whats actually going on.

The same travel agents that told everyone to bring $US to Mexico a few years ago, are the same ones that are now telling everyone that the $US are not accepted. Consistent bad advice on both counts.

Get pesos from your bank at home, or go to an ATM in Mexico and get pesos. It will do nothing but cost you money, and hassle the Mexicans if you bring $US.

And if you are buying something at a place that prices in $US (tourist trap), negotiate in $US, until you get a satisfactory price, then multiply by 10 and offer that as a final price in pesos. If you settle on a price in $US and pay by credit card, they will convert that $US to pesos at an attractive rate to them, and charge your card in pesos. Agree on a peso price before you close the deal, and there will be no surprises.
